Sakura and Keroberos chase a the Jump card, and Sakura uses Windy to capture it. She wakes up the next morning and notices Kero-chan watching the video of last nights fight again. Sakura tells the readers a bit of information about herself, her friend Tomoyo, and Kero-chan. She introduces her family. She inhales her breakfast so that she can leave for school with her brother and catch a glimpse of her brother's friend, Yukito. Yukito and Touya ride Touya bike to school while Sakura roller blades beside them. Yukito gives Sakura a piece of candy as he leaves, and Tomoyo comments on his style. Sakura returns Tomoyo's video to her. She remembers opening the Clow book and starting her hunt for the Clow Cards two months ago. She remembers first meeting Keroberos and him explaining to her about the nature of the Clow Cards. The cards appear and cause mischief. Every card is unique. Because she opened the book, Sakura has magic. (Kero-chan explains that she wouldn't have been able to open the book if she didn't have some magic.) Keroberos grants Sakura the power of the key to the Clow book. She then describes Tomoyo for the readers. So far, Sakura has collected three cards: Windy, Wood, and Jump. Tomoyo video tapes Sakura's fights and designs the costumes Sakura fights in. Sakura enjoys the box horse in gym class. She watches her brother play soccer. She spots Yukito, and he trips. A weird bird appears at school.
Kero-chan thinks that the bird is a Clow Card and tells Sakura to return to school that night as Card Captor Sakura. Sakura's dad brings them some apple pie. Tomoyo's bodyguards leave when Sakura arrives at school. Fly (the big bird) appears. Sakura tries to use Windy on Fly and fails. She and Kero-chan watch Tomoyo's video and Kero-chan explains why Sakura can't use Windy on Fly. He explains that one can use the Clow Cards to tell fortunes and asks Sakura if she's written her name on the cards that she's collected. Sakura dreams that Fly is injured. She asks her brother for a ride to school in exchange for doing the dishes that night. Sakura watches Yukito participate in an archery tournament. Fly appears at school again. Sakura tries to capture Fly again that night. She uses Wood and Jump to catch Fly. She heals Fly and uses it to soar over Tokyo.
Sakura is excited because her class is going to the pool today. Chiharu tells them that something has been tugging on the arms and legs of people in the pool. At the pool, something catches Chiharu's leg and Sakura dives in to save her. Tomoyo ends up saving Sakura. Kero-chan suggests that a Clow Card was behind the incident. Touya arrives and Kero-chan quickly hides. Touya takes some of Sakura's pancakes and she yells at him. Yukito arrives and Sakura offers him some pancakes. When she goes upstairs to deliver them, he opens the door without her making any indication that she was there. Kero-chan guesses that the trouble at the pool was the word of the Watery card and describes the card. Sakura is at cheerleading practice when Chiharu mentions another incident at the pool. Sakura remembers Kero-chan explaining to her why the cards she has won't work against Watery. Sakura's friends notice that she is troubled, and Yukito invites Sakura to have snow cones with him sometime to thank her for the pancakes. That gives Sakura an idea on how to catch Watery. Sakura entices Watery to follow her into the dining hall freezer, and catches Watery after it's frozen.
Naoko sees a ghost on her way home from piano lessons. She tells Sakura and her friends about it during summer cheerleading practice. While retrieving her pom-pom from a tree, Sakura sees Tomoyo practicing for a national singing competition in September. (She was practicing "Momiji," a traditional Japanese song.) Tomoyo agrees to go home with Sakura because Sakura's afraid of the ghost. The ghost appears to Sakura and her friends. Everyone sees a different thing. Sakura sees a woman, Naoko a big swirly one-eyed thing, Chiharu a fuzzy thing with pointy ears, and Tomoyo King Penguin. Sakura discusses the ghost with Kero-chan while bathing. Kero-chan tells Sakura that she needs the Fire card before he can return to his true form. Sakura has Hiyamugi (a type of thin wheat noodles, usually served in ice water) for dinner. Sakura tells the readers about her mother, Nadesiko. Touya is working at many part time jobs to try and buy a motorcycle. They have custard pudding for desert. Tomoyo sends Sakura a fax asking her to go with her to the festival at King Penguin Park tomorrow. Touya and Yukito go with Sakura and Tomoyo to the festival. Touya buys them all candy apples. Yukito explains to Sakura the amount of food he eats in one day. The ghost appears at the lake again during the festival. Sakura investigates the lake that night. Tomoyo show Sakura the latest product from her mother's toy company: and amulet that is a cross between pager and cell phone. Sakura uses Watery to go underwater looking for the ghost. Sakura sees her mother there.
Sakura uses the pager to tell Tomoyo that her mother is there. Before Tomoyo can jump in to save Sakura, someone else does. Sakura almost drowns. She wakes up at Yukito's house. He explains that his grandmother changed her clothes. He tells her that Tomoyo went home with her bodyguards and that he had called Touya. Tomoyo has Kero-chan for the night. She tells Yukito that she had seen her mother in the lake. Touya explains to Yukito that Sakura can't stand ghosts because Touya was always telling her about the ghosts he saw when he was 10. He tells Yukito that he had stopped seeing his mother when he entered Junior High and that he's the only one allowed to tease Sakura. Yukito asks him if he's ever heard of a 'sister complex'. Tomoyo visits Sakura and Kero-chan apologizes to her because he couldn't help her. Sakura tells them about seeing her mother, and that she plans to go back despite Kero-chan's protests. Sakura flies over the lake that night to ask her mother why she's there. She falls in the water again and uses Watery to catch Illusion. Tomoyo pulls out a change of clothes for Sakura. Sakura leaves for the first day of the new trimester. Touya leaves later because he can get there quicker on his new motorcycle. Nadesiko's ghost appears to Touya briefly.
