Excerpts from Guru's Biography by Moorkoth Kumaran

Moorkoth Kumaran was one of the intellectual disciples of Guru in Malabar. Moorkoth wrote a biography of Narayana Guru while Guru was alive. This biography contains the essence of Guru's message. This is relevant now, especially when there is an attempt to distort Guru's ideas and give new opportunistic interpretations. What Guru gave a whole generation was self-esteem and self-respect. Guru gave specific guidelines for the conducting of temples. "Unlike in the olden days, it is not necessary to make expensive temples. There is no need to spend money on celebrations and fireworks. What we need is big rooms and halls for people to come and sit. We need teaching facilities and gardens. There should be facilities for industrial training. The contributions from people should be utlized in a way useful to the poor people. It's not possible to keep the 'pond' clean all the time. What we need is the bathing faclities with tap water." What we see here is the forward looking attitude of Guru.

Guru's own words are quoted in the biography (Page 148) the following is in Malaylam font Kerala

Here is the whole article by Moorkoth Ramunny (former Cabinet Secretary during Nehru's period) from Mathrubhumi:

* How important these words are! Almost half a century later words the same meaning were written by a great civil rights leader in the United States! "My mother taught me that I should feel a sense of "somebodiness" but that on the other hand I had to go out and face a system that stared at me in the face every day saying that you are "less than", you are "not equal to" (Autobiography of Martin Luther King Jr Page 3) Attacking the "separate system for Negros" King continues "I could never adjust to the separate waiting room, separate eating places, .... because the very idea of separation did something to my sense of dignity and self-respect."
