The Teachings of Guru

The teachings of Narayana Guru are simple and straightforward. There is no halo of ambiguity or high-sounding words. These words are extremely relevant now, as they were relevant the time they were given out.

One in kind, one in faith,
One in God is man
Of one same womb, one there is at all.

All are of one Self-fraternity
Such being the dictum to avow,
In such a light how can we take life
And devoid of least pity go on to eat

Whichever the religion
It suffices
If it makes a better man.

Ask not, Say not Think not caste

Acts that one performs
For one's own sake
Should also aim for the good
Of other men.

Love of others is my happiness,
Love that is mine is happiness for others.
And so, truly, deeds that benefit a man
Must be a cause for other's happiness too.

Grace, Love, Mercy -all the three -
Stand for one same reality- Life's Star
He who loves is who really lives.

Whatever may be the difference in men's
creed, dress, language etc. because they all
belong to the same kind of creation,
there is no harm at all in their dining
together or having marital relation with
one another.

Liquor is poison
Make it not
Sell it not
Drink it not.

Devoid of dividing walls
Of caste or race
Or hatred of rival faith
We all live here
In Brotherhood

PRAYER SONG

O' God! Do Thou Guard us,
And forsake us not;
Thou art our Sailor

Across the Sea of Suffering,
Thy Feet,
A Mighty Steam -boat,

One by one
when all have been told,
as none is left over,
save the teller,
So may the Inner Self
be firmly fixed in Thee!

Giver of never-failing gifts of food
and clothing and other things,
Our Guardian,
Thou enriches our lives
Thou, and thou alone,
art, to us, Overload.

Like the sea and the waves
and the wind
and the deep may we
and the great illusion
And Thy Might and Thyself
be comprehended by me!

Thou art Creation itself,
the Creator and the Universe
Of created Things ,and Thou art,
O! God! Likewise
The Material Apparatus
and Furniture of creation,

Thou art the great illusion,
and also the Author and
Enjoyer of that illusion,
and Thou art the master
Who can remove all illusion
and grant the Supreme Union.

Thou art the truth and
Wisdom and Joy,
Thou art likewise the Present,
Past and Future,
Nor art Thou really separate
from the spoken Word.

Thy being , filled intensely,
to overflowing ,
With transcendent Glory,
we praise, O! 'Great One'
Victory to The who art full
of Auspicious Marks.

Victory to Thee, O! Great
Shining One.
Protector if the weak.
Victory to Thee, O!
Blissful Striving, Ocean of love,
to Thee all Victory,

In the Deep Sea, of Thy
Majestic Splendour
May we all be deeply
immersed, and forever
May Bliss Eternal
reign supreme!
