Procedures for Obtaining a West Virginia Falconry Permit

1. Carefully read all information included in the application packet. This packet includes an application form, a brochure on WV Falconry, an Examination Guidance Document and the West Virginia Code of State Rules (58CSR65) pertaining to the practice of falconry in the state.

2. Fill out the enclosed state application. The application and issuance fee is $250 for a new permit. This is non-refundable. Make checks payable to the WV Division of Natural Resources. Return the application and fee to the nearest WVDNR, Law Enforcement District office. If you are applying as an apprentice, you must first locate a licensed falconer who will agree to be your sponsor.

3. When you have competed the application and are ready to take the examination, you will be scheduled for a date, time and place at a WVDNR District office or the Elkins Operations Center that is convenient for you.

4. An inspection of your facilities will be arranged after you have passed the examination.

5. After your facilities have passed the inspection and your application has been approved, you will be issued a West Virginia falconry permit.

6. You are also required to have a federal falconry permit. To obtain this, write to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Migratory Bird Permit Office, Post Office Box 779, Hadley, Massachusetts 0 1035-0779 or call (413) 253-8642. Their fee is $25. You must have a copy of a valid West Virginia falconry permit to obtain the federal falconry permit.
