Patterns of Male Intimacy: Part 1 Secret Lore of Gardening
Part 2: The Living Room Mysteries
Graham Jackson 1991, 1993
-nature of h. - like 6th sense, but debbased when simply put on equal footing with hetero
-shamans, actors, artists, etc fear of unknown leads to general neurosis in society over h, though some societies less so (Arab, Indian) maybe due to greater respect for male culture
i(+t) yellow (natural - sky, vision)
|
|
red (cultural - arts)----------------------blue (cultural - ftsciences)
|
|
s(+f) green (natural - earth, physical)
-b-r more rational, extrovert; y-g irrational, introvert
-berdache occupied in weaving, farming, gardening, handicrafts (women's activities), and tribe's most prolific worker because never pregnant or raising children
-as half-man half-woman, he plays role of mediator between the sexes, acting as counselor for marital and other relationship difficulties. To him is often entrusted the education of childrenand the guardianship of problem adolescents. More important yetis his familiarity with the spirit world; as an interpreter ofdreams and visions, he has no peer but the shaman. When he isthe shaman, he is responsible for the spiritual health of the whole community. It is this inextricable bond of earth and spirit in the life of the berdache that qualifies him as a supreme example of the dark green man, or Prophet of the Land. p33
-resembles Jung's portrait of the man with the positive mother complex. Just as Jung suggested that it is his feminine streak that gives the mother's son his particular sensitivity to relationship, education and the spiritual life, so it is the berdache's heightened relationship to the world of the Great Mother that allows him to render meaningful interpretations of her messages upon which the Indians depend for survival; he is, in fact, a kind of medium through which the earth spirit communicates.
-One might interpret the energies behind such opposing political and socio-economic systems as capitalism (although for Americans money menas only green) and socialism as yellow and green. Green was certainly a force to be reckoned with in the late 1960s when capitalism's glinting value system based on the gold standard was challenged by the advent of "flower power"; and it remains a considerable force in such manifestations as the green parties of Europe and other environmental protection lobbies, where the enemy is not exactly yellow but blue and red, which exploit both earth and sky for their own ends.
(ie, science and culture (mind) the problem vs private property (body)?)
-Some have described Classicism and Romanticism as a conflict of yellow and green...
The analyst ... should be willing to carry the patient, not actively but like water carries the swimmer or the earth carries the walker, that is, to be there for the patient, to be used without too much resistance against being used... and indestructible - as are water and earth. (Michael Balint, The Basic Rault: Therapeutic Aspects of Regression, p. 167) p. 65
-two types of h relationships - (a) man-boy, (b) comrades-in-arms
-yellow-green balance race, class, sex
'offspring' CREATIVE
-red and blue, as cultural men, preserve, defend and polish the basic creative achievements that green and yellow have won for the culture; they may also provide the means for these achievements to go ahead. (purple flower is culture itself, a mix of blue and red, that must be constantly renewed through green and yellow union. Culture as Eros? p. 71
(a) initiatory love to fight Great Mother (matriarchy, mother complex)
-Whether the older is yellow or green, the basci nature of the relationship is the same: initiatory. The older man initiates the younger into manhood. From the point of view of an older green man, initiation must move through the senses, the body, to an understanding of the miracles of concrete existence and of the nature of masculinity, its pleasures and perils, its heart and soul. Defined by an older yellow man, initiation is a journey into the lore, the imagery, the traditions, the sacred dimensions of manhood. p. 73
-Greek love unites two free men
-Roman love between free men and their slaves. p. 78
-'Bonzes' of China, Japan, Malaysia - Buddhist priests, have youths or boys attached to the service of the temples.
-apotheosis of Hyacinthus into Apollo shows transformative power of male-male intercourse whereby the earth boy becomes the sky man. p. 80
-Melanesia - "men have to be made, women simply are" (a la men defined by function, women by relations)
-women enemies of 'semen power' ie, mystification vs disparagement
-rites designed to turn boys into men do so by "feminizing" them, making them aware of such womanly qualities as receptivity and submissiveness... mystical marriage of yellow and green forces that each partner, with the aid of the other, comes to see as crucial components of real independence. What they discover together is a creative masculine potency that contains both a striving for sovereignty (yellow) and a capacity to be or to find pleasure in being (green) p. 82
-the archetype often needs to use us in order to become conscious (subconscious desire -> seduction -> knowledge)
(b) brother-in-arms love to fight Great Father (patriarchy, hatred of other race/nation and resultant alienation (father-complex a and b together OEDIPAL COMPLEX))
-If a culture grooms men to kill men, and does not provide an outlet for men also to love men, then serious imbalance reaching to a profound alienation of men from themselves could be the result. Institutionalized homosexuality attempts to contain this erotic connection ritually. p. 92
-> age-mates
-Gilgamesh and Engidu, the hero's fight with the Great Mother dragon
-homoeros is viewed by the patriarchy as inimical to its aims because it moves to right the imbalance which patriarchy imposes by means of alienation. p. 126
-Perhaps without war and ecological disaster men would never recognize the importance of seeking the healing Eros in and among themselves, or see that Eros as well as aggression is an issue between men...In this twilight of the patriarchal gods, we might also argue that we cannot really afford another war, another dead sea, another poisoned landscape. Men must find another way to love each other. p. 128
-g-y relationships have numinosity of incounter with Self, psyche, r-b deomonstrate fascination exerted by shadow
-b = power and control; r = love and f
-Melanaus and Paris both defined by relationship to f (Helen) ie, vanity, weakness (red)
-Hector (P's brother) and Greek Ajax (blue)
-Antony red (foreign = f, out of control), Octavian (Virgil's patron for Aeneid blue)
-Aeneas red (Dido, Cybele) -> blue (founded Rome)
-Lancelot red
-both r & b conservative (g&y rebels against reality)
-red man anima-possessed: embellisher, connector (Bacchus - lives in chaos), cavalier (philosopher, Knight of Round Table (which is a y concept)
-blue (practical, shoulds/ shoudn'ts, rules, tradition, convention, culture, sublimation of feeling and instincts, ATTRACTS as it withdraws (y & r repel), platonic, 'true-blue, blue-suited, blue-collar, bachelor buttons, forget-me-nots, loyalty, constancy, plans, ambitions), daddy's boy whose mother's femininity shaped by m cultural expectations, devaluing f, sex => control, fear of emotional exposure, maintain illusion of control: fraternity brother (erratic sexual performance, drugs to avoid emotional issues, stranded in cherished naivete), professional, chief of staff (like cavalier, more philosophical)
-r-b - hostile since society devalues f, especially in men
-because of slighter build, shorter stature, lack of body hair, Asian men more popular choice to carry b man's projection of f (can be passive with them
-red tries to escape Mother in b partner, but merely fall in arms of Mother's negative animus (his own shadow). Demeaning dex made to Mother's orders. By their failure and his unhappiness, he was pleasing her. Self-hatred learned in infancy leads to self-punishment. Goes after undeveloped b (tough, conservative, dumb, violent). Try to go for more developed b? Or better, try to balance r/b, a la Aeneas
-r's Mother hovering in background of dreams is like presiding spirit behind the hopless dalogue with b masculinity represented by his father. Mother-complex anti-creative, anti-life. Domestic details in dreams emphasise at loss to deal with her influence (need garlic flowers, silver cross, wooden stake)
-when Mother joins forces with a stern and forbidding b spouse, children grow up underfed & frightened of experience of feelings.
-b resists his homos, pays for it, goes for straight men, plays f part -> greater self-disgust
-the way out is through g or y door - gay relations as simply creative exchanges with no concessions to collective protocol that governs r-b matings (challenge y man's vision and imagination) ie, go to 3rd world, step outside our r-b cultural straight-jacket (Maurice goes from g youth to Clive's y, magnifying M's r nature tho he adopts b persona, and graduates to y to Alec's g)
-must make peace with one's b persona (we're all forced to have). Set it aside and experience/ heal wounded r. Not abandon or escape, but graduate
-g&y - archetype of Change, chaotic, subversive
-r&b axis dominated since beginnings of statehood and concomitant moral and military apparatus. At specific moments (high Middle Ages, early Renaissance, birth of Romanticism, fin-de-siecle epoque to Russian Revolution, 1960s, g&y temporarily eclipsed r&b.
-1960s: g -return to nature, freer sexuality; y - Eastern philosophy, occult, utopian statehood, mind-expanding drugs j(not like b drug use). But b-r cash in. Nature vs culture.
-r-b fear of disruption of life patterns
-'nature imitates art' reflects force of 19th c + culture to mold/ control nature/ creativity
-b-r offers solid, permanent home to g-y creativity
-motif of death and transformation in y-g stories reflects fleetin nature of g-y union. R-b offers men a chance to have a history
-b man has heroic journey to meet the r in himself - his submissive, serving, emotional side - the maiden princess he must rescue. R man must take control of his life
-y-r - union of vision with feelings and love of beauty (Wilde)
-g-b - perfect fantasy for gay men - grounded earthiness with toughness and coolness of b
-y-b - philosophical m
-too much tension for pure opposites. y-r with g-r, etc
-y gay has least to do with women. Both creative work and sexual fantasy life may teem with images but fantasy life dominant (also true of his relations with men)
