My SCA persona is the product of my research into the history of the Varangian Guards. He is one of the Englinovarangoi. These English-born nobility were disposessed by the Normans in 1066 and travelled to Byzantium to fought for the Emperors. High on their list of motives was the chance to kill Normans. With such an exotic persona, who needs to invent one !
Born in 1065, Guthroth left his home in 1082 and traveled first to the great Burgh of Peckforton and then to the Imperial city of Miklagard. Once there he entered the ranks of The Varangian Guard under the command of Thoregir The Mercenary. Over the years he rose to become Captain of the Varangians stationed at Cherson in the Crimean peninsula. His time away from home has led to him being disposessed of his holdings as an English Thegn, and he his one abiding passion is to kill as many Normans as he can during his life. After many years travel he prefers the Eastern style of dress, with the baggy 'Rus' trousers and the decorated belt. I am working to transcribe the story of Guthrothr's travels and adventures, and when ready they will be found on a link here (but not yet).
While in service with the Emperor of Byzantium, he saw the effectiveness of siege engines both for battering fortresses into submission and against troops in the field, and he is planning to build and use one in Drachenwald.
About 5 years ago I tried to get into the SCA but time and other projects got in the way. During the course of getting ready for Hastings 2000 I was contacted by several members from the US and Europe, and after the event was over I stayed in touch.
