" " Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine. "
If you opened a movie dictionary and looked for the definition of the word " classic ", you'd most likely find the word " Casablanca ", accompanied by a picture of a moody Humphrey Bogart, head slumped downwards with a bottle of liquor and a glass. For me, this is the defining image of " Casablanca ". A beautiful, atmospheric , emotional image. It sums up the character of Rick Blaine, a cynical worldly man …. with a heart.
Casablanca is a stunning achievement from start to finish, a completely and utterly faultless film that'll have the song " You Must Remember This " playing over and over in your head, long after the movie is over . It has overtaken " Shakespeare In Love " as my favourite Romance of all time, because once you see this film ( as most of you will have , several times ) you'll understand that for this genre, there is no other film that comes within a million miles of it.
To briefly outline the story to anyone who has been asleep for the past 58 years, it is the tale of two lovers drawn apart by war , and unfortunate circumstances . Humphrey Bogart, in his greatest role, plays Rick Blaine , the wealthy owner of a café in Casablanca , a place that people can't wait to see the back of. His one time love, Ilsa Lund , has unexpectedly come to Casablanca with a man wanted by the Nazi's, Victor Lazlo , and brought many painful memories back with her. What unfolds is a tale of love, hope and trickery.
Bogart is wonderful as the love - lorn cynic , Rick , who's world is turned upside-down when his lost love returns to town. He captures every emotion, every word , every gesture impeccably. Each and every sarcastic implication is timed masterfully , and his heart-broken stares are truly iconic. If you look carefully at the moment when he suddenly comes face to face with Isla, the way in which his expression suddenly changes is amazing. In one glimpse , that world-wise , sarcastic face melts into shock and distress, like he has seen a ghost. Now that , is acting at it's best.
Ingrid Bergman gives an equally fantastic performance as Isla , the women that broke an im-penetrable heart. Her look is graceful and her dewy eyed innocence and compassionate love for Rick is utterly convincing.
Paul Henried , Claude Rains and Conrad Veidt give terrific character performances in their respective roles, some of Casablaca's shadier figures.
The film also contains some great humour, mostly at the hands of Bogart, and the scene featuring the two German " attempting " to speak proper English is hilarious.
Casablanca features some brilliant direction at the hands of Michael Curtiz, a lot of the film is shot in shadowy area's , which creates a mystic, romantic atmosphere. There are some excellent character capturing moments, notably a zooming shot of Bogart moodily pulling on a cigarette at the bar. Little moments like this , insightful images, help the film to affirm it's status as one of the greatest movies ever made.
There are too many superb scenes to mention here, because if I did , I would have to name every scene in the film. Its that good.
Nothing that I can say here can describe the sheer brilliance of the film that inspired this website's title. I can say though, that if you haven't seen Casablaca , you haven't yet properly experienced classic cinema.
Not by a long shot. |
