After reading the reviews and seeing the commercials for " Chicken Run " I thought that it did look interesting, but still could not see how I could like it. I mean, it's a movie made in plastescene about a group of chickens ! Much and all as I enjoyed Toy Story 2, this kind of thing is usually not something that I go for.
Well … boy, did that group of chickens prove me wrong. Having now seen the movie I can tell you, " Chicken Run " is a terrific film. Not only is it highly original and funny , it has an excellent plot supported by great animation and voice work.
The basic plot of Chicken Run is the story of a group of chickens who plan and plot endlessly to escape from their coup. Their leader is an optimistic chicken named Ginger who, unlike some of the other chickens, see's the bigger picture. That beyond the confinements of the coup there are green fields and hills, a big world to explore. But as we see in the opening sequence, the chickens try and try and try but seem destined to spend the rest of their lives laying eggs and eventually getting the chop from the farmers, Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy. That is until one day a rooster named Rocky lands in their coup and in return for being hid by the chickens from his circus owners, proclaims he will teach the chickens how to fly.
The one element that helps Chicken Run to be more than mild amusement is it's characters. Strong characters. These chickens have personalities. Ginger is hopelessly optimistic, she believes that the chickens will get out, she is a leader. Rocky is smug at first, but as the film procedes we see his insecurity regarding his " secret ". Then there is the Scottish chicken who calculates everything. Measurements, ratios, odds. This chicken is Ginger's assistant. Where Ginger dreams of escaping, she supports her but quickly brings the reality to the fore. The two cockney rats who supply the materials needed for "The Great Escape ". The characters are interesting. As things move along we grow to like the chickens, care about them, root for them in their struggle. This is integral, because other-wise its just interesting eye-candy.
The set-pieces in the movie are outstanding. My favourite was when Rocky attempts to rescue Ginger from Mrs.Tweedy's dastardly "Chicken Pie " machine. This was edge-of-your-seat stuff! The chickens manoeuvring their way out of whirling blades, deadly flames and evading a gravy squirter! The ending has my heart-pounding all the way also, and I am going into some details of that now, so if you don't want to spoil the film for yourself, don't read.
I loved towards the end, when Ginger was trapped under the make-shift runway , the moment when Rocky, gliding in slow-motion over the fence on his bike screams " Ginger !!! " and comes to her rescue. To me it was like the scene in "Star Wars" when Han Solo came to Luke's rescue screaming " Yee-Ha!". It was just one of those perfect adrenalin moments.
Chicken Run also features many "hen" jokes, as expected and some hilarious in-jokes, suchh as the introduction of Rocky, shouting " Freedom!!!!" while hurtling through the air. This is of course a reference to Mel Gibson's epic Braveheart, when Gibson famously shouted the patriotic cry.
" Chicken Run " is fantastic viewing from start to finish, for young and old, and don't worry because as the film's poster says - " This ain't no chick flick." |
