Paul Verhoeven's latest film " Hollow Man ", which is loosely based on the classic " Invisible Man " story , is an entertaining , but instantly forgettable piece of fluff. There are a number of things to be admired here , but overall " Hollow Man " is a conventional bag of Hollywood tricks that never reaches its potential. The story revolves around a brilliant scientist named Sebastian Caine, who has discovered a formula that enables creatures to become invisible. After testing the formula on animals, to the annoyance of his colleagues , Caine wants to be the first human test of the formula. But, as you may have guessed, things don't all go according to plan and Caine indulges in rape and violence while invisible , while his colleagues try desperately to stop him. The first half hour or so of the film is well constructed, we are introduced to the principal characters and given various appetisers for the amazing special effects that are to come. We see the genius of Dr. Caine, working through the night to find a formula for invisibility and his jealously and lust for colleague Linda McKay. Verhoeven quickly establishes Caine as the bad guy of the film, with sexism and cruelty to animals all traits of his character. However, Bacon's character is the only one in the film with an ounce of personality. All the other characters might as well be cardboard cut outs, they are extremely boring and are seemingly only in the film as an outlet for Caine's rage. The film is undoubtedly a visual feast . The special effects are absolutely astounding , whether it be a gorilla re-appearing layer by layer from invisibility or Bacon's hollow man peering through a face mould. Whenever things get slightly predictable, the audience is quickly enlivened by an amazing digital effect. Where " Hollow Man " fails is in that it is utterly , utterly predictable. Once you've seen one act of violence from the hollow man, you've seen them all. The ending, like " What Lies Beneath " is extremely stupid and overblown and employs the formulaic " you think the bad guy is dead but he's not " tactic, which is absolutely laughable. The characters apart from Caine , as I've stated previously are brain-searingly dull and given such magical line's as " Sebastian's cracked the code! ". That’s about as exciting as things get really. For a supposedly scary movie, " Hollow Man " conjures up very few scares indeed. When they do come , it is generally in the " he's behind you " mode, and can be seen coming a mile off by the audience. Kevin Bacon holds the one shining performance in the movie, and whenever his creepy incarnation is off-screen, things become very boring indeed. Elisabeth Shue is completely wasted as Dr . Linda McKay, she has little to do but scream and be flirtacious with her male counterpart's. There is nothing special about Verhoeven's pretty standard direction , and as in most of his films, he opts for harsh violence in favour of real thrills. Despite it's many weaknesses, " Hollow Man " is nowhere near as awful as Verhoeven's previous effort, the nightmare that was " Starship Troopers ". All in all, " Hollow Man " is shallow, sometimes entertaining movie that barely achieves anything other than showing what an average Hollywood action film is like.
