Well, Christmas is over , the tree is gone, and the fanboys have got fatter. Some things never change. Anyway, over the past few months and weeks I've seen loads of great movies, and some not so great. Here's the pick of the great ones : The Sting , The Omen , Remains Of The Day, The Usual Suspects and The Graduate. All of these are 5 star movies , which I'll eventually get around to reviewing.
In the cinema recently I've seen ( but not reviewed ) The Way Of The Gun, Small Time Crooks and Wonder Boys . WOTG was a pretty cool movie, good central performances, but not half as subtle as the amazing " Usual Suspects ". Ryan Phillipe surprised me with a very good performance, he showed that he actually can act. Small Time Crooks, although not near Woody's best , is a really funny movie, great escapism and a terrific performance from Tracey Ullman. Wonder Boys dissappointed me quite a bit , I didn't particularly like Douglas's performance, although there were some really funny lines.
On TV last night I got the chance to see Joel " Nooooo!!! " Schumacher's surprisingly good Falling Down . I really liked Douglas here, it was a very good movie, although a but predictable in the end. I bought Magnolia on DVD a few days ago, my first thoughts are that it is fantastic at times, and loosely focused at others. Great performances all round , particularly Tom Cruise. On Saturday I saw Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger , Hidden Dragon and was disappointed. Although the action was fantastic , I found the dialogue pretty awful and the story nothing special. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood, so I shall see it again soon.
That ends the first entry in my online movie diary, and you lucky kids will get another edition soon.
