As Summer blockbusters go, Mission Impossible 2 actually isn't that bad. Its far from a great film, but for two hours worth of popcorn entertainment, M:I-2 is just fine.
There isn't really much to link this sequel to its predecessor , apart from Tom Cruise reprising his Bond-esque role as super - agent Ethan Hunt.
The plot is relatively simple : A former agent named Shawn Ambrose ( Dougray Scott ) has stolen a deadly virus with the capacity to kill millions of people. Before Ambrose has the chance to to sell the virus to the highest bidder, Agent Hunt is on his trail, enlisting Ambrose's old flame, Nyah Hall ( Thandie Newton ), to purposely go crawling back to him, and to get as much information regarding his dastardly plot as she can. It proves more difficult than first thought for Nyah to get up and leave him, having gotten vital information, thus needing Hunt to go in and save the day.
I preffered M- I-2 to the first movie for a number of reasons. Firstly, you don't have to be a genius to figure out the plot and secondly , the action is a lot better. Cruise is fine as the daredevil IMF man, but Hunt isn't exactly the most interesting of characters. We, the audience, don't really know his personality that well, he's more like a male- model who happens to be very brave and daring. This fact means that we're not that concerned what happens to him. In X-Men, Wolverine ( the lead character) is also very heroic but he is charismatic and likeable, which is missing in Cruise's Ethan Hunt. This is the same situation with Dougray Scott and Thandie Newton, their performances aren't bad, it's just that they seem to be the stereotypical bad guy and love interest.
Now for the good . Some people seemed to feel that there is too much of a lull in action in the middle of the movie, but I found this to be the most interesting part . Here we get an insight into Ambrose's plans and there is a great suspense scene with Cruise, Newton and Scott set at a racecourse. This film has John Woo written all over it with doves fluttering ( as in "Face/Off" ) away as Cruise pounces from behind a door. There is also plenty of two-handed gun fighting and acrobatics galore.
I, myself, am not much of an action fan but if you are , I'm sure you'll savour moments in this film. There is one thrilling scene that stood out for me, when Agent Hunt sky-dives through the roof of a huge skyscraper, to find and destroy samples of the virus. This one had me on the edge of my seat, from the spectacular slow-motion leap from the helicopter to the gun battle inside.
Woo, in my opinion , goes totally over the top for the ending of the movie with some ludicrous motor-bike chasing, that seems to go on forever , and display of martial arts on a beach. However, there is one great use of slow-motion here that I won't reveal.
All in all, M-I-2 is a pretty good action-adventure movie with some good set-pieces that is unfortunately marred by un-interesting characters plus over the top and overlong action sequences. |
