Watching bad movies isn't a very pleasant experience . Watching really bad movies is worse. " Nutty Professor 2 " is , to cut to the chase , a really bad movie. When going to see films, I like to look for the good in them rather than the bad. I love movies , I don't go into a cinema wanting to hate the film, where's the enjoyment in that? But when I witness something as bad, as I have today, I like to give my views, so here goes :
I for one, really liked " The Nutty Professor ". I found it to be a hilarious exhibition of Eddie Murphy's comic genius. It also had an intruiging, over the top storyline and successfully made the audience feel sympathy for the kind, obese professor , Sherman Klump.
But, oh dear , for me the sequel didn't bare much resemblance. Plot? Forget it, " The Klumps " is just one vulgar, unfunny joke after the other. Where the original film had you shedding a tear for Klump one minute, and rolling in the aisles the next , the sequel makes no attempt at any emotional depth, simply throwing endless sex jokes in your face. Things revolve around Sherman's relationship with a beautiful professor named Denise ( Janet Jackson ) and the old ghost of Sherman's slim alter ego, Buddy Love, coming back to haunt him.
The story sways from Sherman being tormented by Buddy, to scenes of his family hurling abuse at one another, semingly to fill the gaping plot holes. When first seen, some of Murphy's family character creations were uproaringly funny, like the rude Papa Klump and randy Granny Klump. These were made all the funnier by their minimal use in the original. Here, the characters are used to absolute extremity. By the end, I just couldn't wait to see the back of them. I mean, the odd joke about Granny Klumps " appetite " for men is funny, but in almost every scene, there is a stupid, un-original sex gag.
The characters aren't given any depth in their second outing, and there was but one character here that I found slightly likeable. Having likeable characters in dumb movies like this is essential ( ie. Dumb & Dumber , There's Something About Mary ) because otherwise, why should we care what humiliation they are subjected to?
By the end of the film, things have gotten extremely tiresome . Notably the lame gag when Mama Klump and Papa Klump are dancing. It is totally devoid of wit or originality and basically sums up the whole film. Pathetic.
I don't believe that the blame for this mess should be levelled at Eddie Murphy. His character acting is very good, and the banal lines he is subjected to aren't his fault. One thing about his acting , however , that I found extremely frustrating was that for 40 % of the time, it was very hard to distinguish what he was saying. Admittedly, some accents are hard to understand, but to me this was just some strange dialect.
Janet Jackson gives a surprisingly good performance , baring in mind the badly written, boring character that she plays. She manages to get some real emotion into her scenes , and is the one remotely likeable character in the bunch.
Having recently seen " Casablanca " highlighted even more the awful-ness of this film. Have some sense , unlike me, and save your money.
See this film at your peril. |
