While sitting in the theatre, waiting for "U-571 " to start, I thought to myself, why oh why did I come to see this movie? I could've gone to see the highly enjoyable " X-Men " for a second time, and was dreading another turgid sfx turkey. But, to my extreme delight and surprise, U-571 was one of the best action-drama' s I've seen in quite a while.
After viewing the awful " Perfect Storm ", I wasn't setting my sights too high for this submarine drama, all I asked for were some decent thrills and characters that weren't entirely wooden. And, my wish came true, and more.
" U-571" is set during WW2, and the Allies are undertaking a secret mission to capture the Enigma coding machine from a German U-Boat. They plan to disguise themselves as a delivery crew, coming with fuel for the German submarine. But, as you may have guessed, everything doesn't go as planned. I'm not going to reveal much else plot-wise, because , unusually, going in to this film I had very little knowledge of it's story, key scenes or characters. And this fact made the film much more enjoyable and suspenseful for me.
The absolute best thing about this movie is its suspense. Director Jonathon Mostow handles some of the set-pieces here wonderfully, there is some great camerawork here. By the end, my nails were worn down to stumps. Instead of going for an all-out noise-fest, many of the scenes are accompanied by an eerie silence. The dead calm of the murky depths. This works, because you don't know when there will be a sudden explosion or attack, and whn it does come, the audience is up off their seat. There are some great scenes of the Allies in the submarine trying to manouver their way out of Nazi explosives, the anxiety is almost unbearable. There is another scene of the crew of the submarine going deeper and deeper into the ocean, so as to stay clear of explosives. The submarine is old and so with every meter further that it travels , the water pressure becomes even greater. Gripping stuff.
Matthew Mconnaghey and Harvey Keitel are excellent in their limited but interesting roles. Keitel nails his sea-dog chief, a brave but nervous man. Mconnaghey plays a young man who desperatley seeks to be promoted to skipper of a ship, and through unfortunate losses, realises his ambition but has to prove that he is man enough for it. The characters aren't very complex, but what we do see of them, they are likeable and courageous people.
The movie is packed with wonderful set-pieces, from the Enigma re-capturing mission to the climatic showdown with the Nazi Destroyer. The direction zooms from sailor to sailor, capturing each one's emotions which gives a real feel to the occasion.
The special effects used in the movie are also truly outstanding. There was never a moment when I was thinking, " that’s got to be a model ", it was all amazingly realistic.
For great entertainment and a lot of thrills I highly recommend U-571. After a year when so many blockbusters haven't reached there potential, its great to see something that doesn't disappoint, on any level. |
