The Admirality Islands are a group of islands in the Bismarck Sea.During Febuary and March of 1944, U.S. Army units landed on several of these islands, beginning with the island or Los Negros on Febuary 29th.The Japanese defenders fought off the Americans until March 8th, when they had retreated to New Britian.Los Negros was then deemed secure and supply ships safely arrived at Seeadler Harbor.

The other major landing was on Manus Island on March 18th.In the fierce fighting, U.S. troops first used Flamethrowers against the Japanese. The fighting on Manus continued until March 28th.After the Japanese were defeated, the Americans built an advance naval base there for the coming Battle of the Philippine Sea, and airfields so they could more easily strike Rabual.
