Faith and Healing
(Heb 11:6 KJV) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
My assignment now is to portray for you the relationship between faith and healing. Who is equal to such a task? To begin with we must ask the question: Why faith? What is so special about this topic that it dominates the spiritual lives of so many Christians? It is faith that permeates the pages of the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation. It is the essential INGREDIENT in any exchange between God and man.
(Heb 4:2 KJV) For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being MIXED with faith in them that heard it.
We cannot please God without it. By our faith we gain access into the grace in which we stand. Deliverance from sin and sickness and all the power of the enemy is by faith.
(Eph 2:8 KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Faith is equivalent to obedience and righteousness.
(Rom 14:23 KJV) And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Faith alone receives from the Father.
(Gal 3:5 NIV) Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?
Faith is the victory that overcomes the world!
What is faith?
(Heb 11:1 KJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Faith is the heart-cry of the child of God. It penetrates the heavens, parting the veil, to obtain all the will of the Father. It is a light the darkness cannot extinguish, an anchor the storm has no power to uproot.
(Eph 6:16 KJV) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Faith sees the invisible, believes the unthinkable, and receives the impossible. Faith never wonders. It always knows. Faith is fully persuaded.
(Rom 4:20 KJV) He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
(Rom 4:21 KJV) And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Faith trusts in the character of our God and in the veracity of His Word. Faith defines truth by eternal standards. It is a gift from the Father to the heart of the believer.
(Rom 10:10 KJV) For WITH THE HEART MAN BELIEVETH unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
It should be ever increasing,
(2 Th 1:3 KJV) We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that YOUR FAITH GROWETH exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
fed on the Holy Scriptures and exercised in the trials of life.
(Rom 10:17 KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
God’s word is the raw material of faith mined from the pages of the testaments.
Faith is the life of the righteous, the substance of intangible hope, the assurance of possession in the absence of perception.
(2 Cor 5:7 KJV) (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
It precedes seeing, hearing, touching. Believing is seeing!
(Mark 11:23 KJV) For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
(Mark 11:24 KJV) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and {then} ye shall have them. (Author’s paraphrase in brackets)
If you can see it, hear it, touch it, it isn’t faith it is knowing.
Faith gives glory to God in advance of evidence others would accept. It sings praises at midnight, ignoring the stocks and worships in the day of adversity. It looks beyond the storm swept sea to meet the master’s eyes and walks upon the living rock of His word.
Faith has a voice!
(Rom 10:8 KJV) But what SAITH it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy MOUTH, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
(Rom 10:9 KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy MOUTH the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(Rom 10:10 KJV) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the MOUTH confession is made unto salvation.
It breathes His life from the heart through the mouth and frames new worlds of beauty conceived in heaven. It calls things that be not as though they were and they become. It calls defeat victory, weakness strength , majestic mountains, level plains.
(2 Cor 4:13 KJV) We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
David believed and spoke and the giant perished. Joshua believed and spoke and the walls crumbled. Able believed and now by faith, though dead, he still speaks. If you have ears to hear you can yet hear his words echoing through the ages. Faith has the ring of immortality to it. It speaks of higher thoughts and higher ways. Abraham’s faith is still receiving the promise.
Faith’s words are consistent, stable, unwavering. Only pure, fresh water flows from its spring. The sea is as glass reflecting the timeless beauty of the heavenlies. No wave of doubt spoils the scene.
(James 1:6 KJV) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
(James 1:7 KJV) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
(James 1:8 KJV) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Faith speaks the language of truth, the vocabulary of blessing, the dialect of peace. No lie is found on its holy lips.
Faith receives now! This is the day that the Lord hath made. Today is the day of salvation. God is working here and now. Jesus has completed the work. It is finished. "One day" never arrives. "God will" never receives. Faith believes that it has received from God and then all heaven marshals to provide. Faith chooses a moment calling it today when it inherits its salvation. Then it is done. It is an established fact in the Spirit, an immutable reality. Faith gives God glory, honor and praises for what He has done.
Faith is specific. It knows what it wants. It means what it says. It combs God’s word for the one promise that is the key to the door it has selected. Then with the lips it turns the key, with the tongue of thanksgiving it slides the bolt and with actions in harmony with its words it opens the door. What faith has opened, no man can shut.
(James 2:26 KJV) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Living faith demands action. Noah built the ark. Abraham offered Isaac. David ran to meet the giant. Their faith and their actions were working together. Their actions quickened their faith.
Time is an enemy of faith slowly weakening its grip on victory. Natural faith cowers before it hearing in the distance the tolling of the bell. Patience transcends time. It lifts faith into the divine sphere of eternity where time loses its meaning and death loses its sting.
Patience is a co-heir with faith. Together they inherit the promises.
James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Pure faith is concentrated spiritual power. It is diluted by the solvent of unbelief.
(Mat 17:19 KJV) Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Faith’s power is short-circuited to ground by unforgiveness.
(Mark 11:24 KJV) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
(Mark 11:25 KJV) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
Unforgiveness draws faith down out of the heavenlies to a lower earthly plain where it becomes impotent, ineffective, devoid of power. Jacob’s ladder collapses and there is no route for heaven’s blessings to descend to the earth. Keep not a list of your brother's failings. If you examine it closely you will find your own name written there. Pray not for justice but for mercy. Do you really seek a God of justice? Who could escape? Remember He is the great I AM. He says, "I AM anything you need me to be. I become whatever you say I AM." I say, "His mercy endures forever. His tender mercies are new every morning."
Exo 34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
Exo 34:7a Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,
But for grace, where would we be?
Faith is the gatekeeper of the heart. Whatever we believe, truth or lie, passes the gate to become part of our inner being. Whatever we refuse to believe is barred entrance.
Ezek 12:2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.
Whatever enters the heart will overflow through the mouth and mould reality.
Prov 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Use your faith or lose your faith! Feed it with the Word, water it with the Spirit. Exercise it, embrace it, protect it for your faith is your victory!
