God is Number One

Mark 12:28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

Mark 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Mark 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Mark 12:33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Mark 12:34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

God wants to be FIRST in your life and when He says first He doesn’t mean second! It is an abomination to God for Christians to enthusiastically pursue natural means and other religions for their life and health while ignoring the river that flows from His throne in heaven above. God’s will for you is abundant life and He came to the earth and made the ultimate sacrifice for you to have it. God’s resources are well able to meet every human need and He longs to bless you and your family. He wants you to call Him El Shaddai for He truly is THE ONE who is more than enough. He can supply immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine. Our problem is our small conception of God. We need to stretch our limited minds to encompass an infinite God. Our God is omniscient and omnipotent but to us these have just become words without meaning. We are too familiar with them. Fortunately, God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, can be understood from what has been made.

Let me share with you the wonder of God’s creation. Before the beginning of time Love Himself was alone. His heart ached with the need for someone to lavish that love upon. And He said, "Let us make man, someone like us!". Then in the most extravagant display ever witnessed God created a universe to house His man. Let’s gaze together upon the heavens. That band of light we call the Milky Way is just part of our galaxy. Every grain of light you see there is a Sun, each about a million times bigger than the earth. There are one hundred billion of them in our galaxy and there are at least one hundred billion galaxies. Worlds without end! This means that there are more stars in the sky than there are grains of sand in all the seashores of this entire planet! And God made all of this for His man.

You may ask how I can say the Universe was made for man. Isn’t that an outdated concept? It is not! I will elaborate. The laws of physics that describe our universe contain constants (like the gravitational constant "big G" in the equation GmM /r2) that define our particular universe. Most of them are so fine-tuned that if they varied infinitesimally from their present values there would be no life anywhere, at any time, in the entire universe. The probability of this happening by chance alone is so small that it is functionally equivalent to zero. This means that all of creation must have been intentionally designed to support life.

If life was the reason for the Universe, man was the reason for life. Man is the only living thing that understands the concept of a creator and reaches out for Him. What possible rewarding relationship could God have with a snail or a microbe, for instance? Man has certain attributes in common with the creator. He can design, plan, and work toward a goal as God did in creating the universe. He can appreciate the intricacy, brilliance and beauty of God’s creation and in so doing he gains a rudimentary understanding of the invisible qualities of the creator Himself. God can share the wonder of the cosmos and all it’s unfathomable mysteries only with man. Finally, the pinnacle of life on earth in complexity and the latest organism in order of appearance is man. Complexity or information content is key. A star, for example, is a very simple object compared to a human body. When I studied astronomy at the University of Toronto we simulated stellar physics fairly accurately using only a few gas laws and some nuclear physics equations. The human body, in contrast, is beyond imagination in complexity. It is the greatest investment of God’s unlimited knowledge in all of creation. It is mathematically impossible for the information content of the human genome to have arisen by trial and error (directed only by natural selection) in the entire period of existence of the universe, let alone in the time the earth could support life. This indicates that the information came from outside the visible Universe from a transcendent intelligence with a purpose for man. What other being on earth could possibly provide a reason for creation? When you look up at the stars at night and ask "why", you are the answer.

Over eons of time our God lovingly shaped and formed and molded the stars and the planets and the Earth and then placed the first cell in the ocean. I was taught that the oceans were filled with thin primordial soup of organic compounds formed by random natural processes and that over billions of years the first primitive cells evolved out of the slime. This idea is erroneous for three reasons. First, studies of pre-Cambrian rocks have shown that no organic compounds ever existed independently of cellular fossils. Second, there were at the most tens of millions of years for the first cell to appear. Third, there is no such thing as a "primitive" cell. The simplest cell imaginable is many orders of magnitude more complex than anything our present technology can even envisage. The truth is, more controlled chemical reactions go on inside of one cell than in all the chemical factories on the face of the earth put together. More manufacturing processes go on inside of one cell than are now being performed by all the six billion humans on planet earth (including that done by all their machines). This all occurs in a package smaller than the head of a pin which is capable of exactly duplicating it’s entire structure in a matter of minutes. Now try to imagine 25 trillion cells all communicating and interacting with each other in many complex ways and you will begin to appreciate both your own body and the intelligence, power, wisdom and love of its creator.

Why given these facts would anyone want to trust their precious family’s life and health to anyone but Him? He understands all the intricate, interdependent systems that form your body and He has the knowledge and power to instantly pinpoint and correct any malfunction. He is the body’s original designer and manufacturer.

As a medical doctor I constantly find myself trying to thread a needle with a sledgehammer. Why do you think that drugs have so many side effects? There is no such thing as a "magic bullet" that will fix one system without affecting innumerable others. I am not against medicine, which is my chosen profession. I feel that doctors by physical means are fighting the same enemy that God is, with His infinitely more efficacious methods. Anyone would agree that relieving human suffering is desirable. I simply feel that everything should be in its proper place. This means GOD FIRST. Don’t think of Him as a last resort for healing that just might work, if approached the right way, on the right day, if He felt like it and you were one of the fortunate few. And never, ever get caught up in semi-occult or eastern religious practices like therapeutic touch, reflexology, or yoga looking for a physical blessing. Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than He? God is to be our number one, our all in all, our first and foremost source of health and healing.
