Joplin is a complex person. Or rather, he is a complex of many people. Originally from New York, his family (one of the founding Jewish familes of the country) moved to San Francisco during the gold rush; his father perceived the impending Civil War and sought to fund the North's efforts, as his grandparents funded the American Revolution. The trip was harsh and unkind and he lost his mother in the arduous journey. The gold quickly petered out, but his father re-established his trading company on the West Coast, taking advantage of the new markets and routes on the frontier. Joplin, weary and resentful at his displacement from the East Coast and the interruption of his carreer as a concert pianist, takes a piano-player job in a low-life Barbary Coast saloon/brothel, where he finally takes his current nome de guerre. He falls in love with a Mexican-American woman named Rosalita, but she is a Catholic and Joplin's father renounces his son. She dies several months later in childbirth, and Joplin's child dies with her.
The night of her death, in agony and despair and deep in drink (his usual state since arriving in San Francisco), he plays a Hungarian Waltz (his mother's favorite) with such emotion, that he manages to move a near-bestial Malkavian oracle named Sear. Sear angrily embraces Joplin, violently indoctrinates him into the Camarilla (forseeing the direction San Francisco is heading), and disappears after three days. Joplin enters a deep sleep twice and eventually reawakens in San Francisco during the Loma Prieta quake. Joplin suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder and makes no attempts to hide this from others. His personalities can be radically different: the paranoid computer-and-security man Kiva, the clever political bitch Janus, the disturbed but insightful psychologist Antoinette, and the friendly-faced artist Joplin himself (among others). He has travelled widely in the last two years and moves frequently back and forth between the East and West Coast. He has been seen in the domains of San Francisco, Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, Kenosha, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Southern Maryland, Auckland and Hamilton (New Zealand), and Tampa.
