Chapter 10:
"Tenkaichi Budoukai: First Round: Gyokusai vs. Son Gohan!"

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" Announcer #1’s voice boomed over the loudspeakers, "Our second match of the day is about to begin!"

"Our first match showcased warrior numbers one and two, and was a stunning upset against the well-known Yamucha, as he was beaten easily by a relative unknown, Vegeta!"
Said Announcer #2, managing to sound very excited. "Many of us wonder if out next match can compare to the first, with the number three warrior, Eimin Gyokusai, and the number four warrior, Son Gohan, can compare to the fighting skill we witnessed in the first fight!"

"Yes, but this does look to be an interesting match. At just fifteen years of age, Son Gohan is one of the youngest warriors competing in this Budoukai, but his opponant, at sixteen, isn’t much older."

"It seems these two relative unknowns have taken to the ring, and the fight is about to begin."

"Let’s join Taeko at ringside with Son Gohan!"

"Yes, it’s a pleasure to be here. Son Gohan, a comment, please! How do you think this fight is going to go?"

***

Son Gohan looked up at the attractive young woman who’d called for his attention. "Well, it’s hard to say at the moment."

"There has been talk that the extra year your opponant has on you will give him the advantage of experience in this fight. How do you think you match up?"

Son Gohan smiled, aware that he was being televised, (and probably recorded by the die-hard Budoukai fans). "Well, I’ve been training and fighting sense I was six, so I think I’ve got a good chance of winning." Gohan shrugged. "But then again, you never know, Gyokusai was trained by a close personal friend of mine, who also happens to be fighting in this Budoukai. I just hope I’ll be able to offer him some challenge if I’m unable to beat him."

"There has been some speculation among the die-hard Tenkaichi Budoukai fans about your name, Son Gohan, which is similar to the name of the boy who defeated Piccolo Daimaou."

Son Gohan smiled. "You’re talking about Son Gokou? I’m his son."

The reporter was speachless for a second. "The son of the man who killed Daimaou! Tell me, is your father competing in this tournament as well?"

Gohan’s face darkened. "Otousan is not going to be here... he’s dead, you see. He was killed by Cell."

A horrified look crossed the reporter’s face. "I... I’m sorry! I didn’t know!"

"Not a problem. Listen, the match is going to start, and I’m going to be at a distinct disadvantage if I don’t warm up beforehand."

"Uhh... Hai! Back to you, Dan!"

***

Son Gohan dropped into a high guard position, his legs splayed out wide, front and back, for the sake of balance, as well as to decrease his profile, making him more difficult to hit. He was unsuprised when his opponant dropped to a similar, yet different position.

That’s one of Vegeta’s favorite starting positions! Son Gohan realized, and instantly cursed himself for not expecting this. Trunks was, after all, Vegeta’s son. They’d learned quite a bit of each other’s fighting styles during their year in the Room of Spirit and Time, and it should have been no suprise that Trunks had taught his student some of Vegeta’s favorite moves.

Son Gohan smiled, This was definitely going to be an interesting match.

***

Gyou had never been one to waste time, he studied Son Gohan just barely long enough to assess the warrior as being something less than a threat. His eyes narrowed. This was going to be an easy fight, how strong could one kid _be_?

***

The referee raised his hand. "Fight... BEGIN!"

Son Gohan barely regestered the words before his opponant sprang into action. Attacking all-out on the first move hadn’t been what Son Gohan had been expecting. To his eyes the attempt was both clumsy, and slow. He sidestepped to the left, and was suprised by the sharp pain in his right side, just benieth his ribs. Son Gohan jumped back a half step, and realized what had happened.

"Amazing! The first blow has been struck, and it looks like Gyokusai may have Son Gohan beaten in the skills department. A nicely performed feint, followed by an elbow to the side! Son Gohan has _got_ to be fealing that!"

Gyou’s ‘all out attack’ had been nothing but a feint, the real attack had come when Gohan had sidesteped. Backing off, Son Gohan’s eyes narrowed with respect, it was somewhat rare when someone could take him by suprise, even fighting at less than half power. He cursed himself for underestimating his foe’s cunning, it was obvious that Trunks had trained the ‘boy’.

Gyou’s eyes narrowed as well. "That attack would have incapacitated a normal person."

"I’m far from normal, but then, you’re far from normal as well. It’s not often I’m taken by suprise anymore.

"Whatever."

The pair dropped into fighting positions again. Son Gohan sensed his foe increasing his power, so he decided to do the same, bringing himself up to about half of his current non-Super Saiya-jin maximum.

Gyou launched himself into a series of punches and kicks, which Son Gohan blocked with ease. There’s got to be some trick here, Son Gohan thought between punches, It shouldn’t be this easy!

"Son Gohan appears to be suffering from no ill effects after that brutal hit to the side! One has to wonder if perhaps Son Gohan might be a bigger contender in this tournament than we anticipated!"

"What else could you expect from the son of San Groku?"

"Son Gokou."

"Whatever."

Gyou overextended himself, and Son Gohan slapped him to the ring’s floor, and stepped back.

"Yield?"

"Amazing! Son Gohan has just pounded his opponant into the ring! Gyou might be finished!"

Gyou stood, shaking with anger. "No."

"Good. I’d expect better from one of Trunks’s students." Son Gohan said, taking the offensive for the first time in the match. Attempting to sweap his opponant’s feet from under him, Gyou jumped, kicking out with his left foot. Before Gyou’s attack got close to Gohan, the boy was rolling away. Just as Gyou was landing. Gohan kicked out with both legs, he caught Gyou in the knees, sending the young warrior face first into the ring floor.

"A powerful attack by Son Gohan! How long can Gyokusai keep taking this punishment?"

***

"Come on Gyou! You can do it!"

Trunks crossed his arms. "No he can’t."

Setsuna looked up at Trunks. "Nani?"

"That’s Son Gohan down there, the boy who grew up into the man who trained me. Even was Gyou a match for his power at this point, which he’s not, by the way, Son Gohan can go Super Saiya-jin, and beyond to Super Super Saiya-jin."

Karugo looked up at him. "Then why even have us fight if we’re no match for these warriors of the past?"

"I didn’t say you were no match for them, Karugo. I have every confidence in _you_, but this is a lesson Gyou must learn. He thinks too much of himself now, he’s overconfident, and arrogant. This fight with Son Gohan will show him that he is not, contrary to his appearant beliefs, the strongest warrior in the universe."

Karugo blinked. "Then, you intended for him to loose his first match."

"Hai, but I expect you all to win. You’re stronger than you think, you’ve just got to focus, and apply yourselves to the task at hand."

An’ya smiled. "You’re getting very good at motivational speaking, Trunks."

"Beats living in a van down by the river."

"Amazing! Once again, Son Gohan has knocked his opponant to the floor of the ring. One has to wonder what’s going through Gyokusai’s head right now!"

***

Gyou growled. "How about we quit beating around the bush and just fight at our full strength."

Son Gohan smiled. "Suits me just fine."

Gyou’s power jumped rapidly, his face contorted in a scream of rage. Gohan brought up his power in a similar fashion, and compaired his opponant’s Ki to his own. Damn... I hadn’t expected this!

Gyou, grinning, attacked once again. Son Gohan dodged his opponant’s attack, and delivered a powerful uppercut to Gyou’s midsection, knocking the wind out of the fighter, and dropping him, once again, to the ring.

"And again Gyokusai is on the ground! How long can he keep going like this?"

I hadn’t expected this at all! I thought that Trunks’s students would be _strong_ warriors! This guy isn’t anywhere near as strong as he could be! How could Trunks not let him reach his full potential?

"Jerk! That was a cheap shot!"

This guy’s like Mr. Satan! He's got no _clue_! Screw his potential, it’s a wonder Trunks keeps an idiot like this around at all! Son Gohan shook his head. "You’re no match for me, I can see that now. Save us both some time and just concied that I’m better than you."

"NEVER! Kutabacchimae!" Gyou struck a pose similar to the Kame Hame Ha powerup. Son Gohan redied himself to deflect his foe’s foolish attack.

"Dokuga!"

Son Gohan was, once again, taken completely by suprise by the attack. His muscles siezed up, and his entire body flared with pain as he was struck by multiple daggers of jagged violet lightning. Grimacing, and gritting his teeth against the pain, it was all Son Gohan could do to keep standing. Muscles spasiming wildly, Gohan couldn’t strike Gyou when the older warrior stepped in range. Gyou grinned. "Aww, whay’s wrong? Not ready for such an advanced attack? Poor boy!"

"Amazing! A purple aura surrounded Gyokusai for a second, but it’s gone now! What just happened? Son Gohan isn't moving!"

Son Gohan’s eyes narrowed. Accuse me of a cheap shot, when I’m fighting fairly, and then pull one of your own? I’m the one who should be cussing at you, Hiretsukan!

Gyou punched Gohan square in the jaw, knocking the younger warrior’s head back, and almost causing him to fall over. Gohan straightened, a trickle of blood streaming down the corner of his mouth from where his lips had been split. Gohan growled in anger.

"A powerful blow from Gyokusai! What was Son Gohan thinking? He was doing so well until he let that attack through!"

"I think it’s time _you_ should yield."

Son Gohan’s eyes narrowed, as Gyou once again stepped into attack range. Straining against both the pain, and his protesting muscles, Son Gohan struck out against his attacker, his blow glancing off of Gyou’s cheak.

"Fukanou! No one can recover from my Dokuga Totsugeki that quickly!" Exclaimed Gyou, more suprised than hurt.

***

"Thought so. Gyou’s severely underestimated Son Gohan."

An’ya looked up at Trunks. "Dokuga is Gyou’s strongest attack, I’d know, he’s used it on me in training before. I’m suprised Son Gohan recovered that quickly."

"Don’t underestimate Son Gohan. Even at Super Super Saiya-jin, I’d have a hard time beating him."

"Shh!" Setsuna raised a finger to his lips, "They’re fighting again!"

***

Son Gohan stepped forward, almost completely recovered from the Dokuga. He grabbed Gyou by the older warrior’s green fighting dogi. "Bakayaro!"

Barely showing his strength, Son Gohan threw Gyou completely out of the arena, to the amazement of the announcers, and most of the spectators.

***

"Told you so." Trunks said as he stood up. "Well, shall we see if Gyou needs help extracating his head from whatever small, rocky hill conveniently broke his fall?"

***

"An amazing victory for Son Gohan! If things keep going the way they’re going, this is _definitely_ going to be an interesting Budoukai!"

"You can say _that_ again!"
