U.S. Coast Guard

Q. How do I join a PSU?

A. The first step is to contact a Coast Guard recruiter. You can do this by calling toll free (1-877-NOW-USCG) or by visiting our recruiting Web site at http://www.uscg.mil/jobs/

Q. How often do Port Security Units Drill?

A. Members of PSUs perform a minimum of 60 IDT drills (equivalent of 30 days) and 15 days of Active Duty for Training (ADT) each year. The ADT is frequently conducted as unit training where the unit deploys to a foreign port.

Q. Why does the Coast Guard perform the Port Security Unit Mission?

A. For more than 200 years the Coast Guard has been gaining expertise in providing nearshore waterside security and in the operation of small boats. The PSU mission complements our expertise in conducting over 45,000 law enforcement boardings each year.

Q. Have Port Security Units ever been called to Duty?

A. Yes, PSUs were called to duty for the Persian Gulf War and for Operation Uphold Democracy (in Haiti).

Q. What type of training do members of PSUs recieve?

A. In addition to the traditional skills learned by all members of the Coast Guard, PSU members receive specialized combat skills and weapons training.

Q. If I join a PSU, will I have the opportunity to work in the traditional mission areas of the Coast Guard - saving lives, protecting the environment and enforcing the law?

A. Yes. After you complete your initial assignment with a PSU, you'll have the option of staying with the PSU or transferring to another Coast Guard unit in your area. You'll use many of the same skills you've learned at the PSU as you work right alongside active duty members of the Coast Guard at Search and Rescue Stations and Marine Safety Offices.

Q. Are there special requirements to be a member of a PSU?

A. Yes. Because of the units' "go anywhere, fast" mission, members of PSUs must meet high standards for physical and medical readiness. For example, PSU members are required to have a comprehensive series of inoculations soon after they join their unit.

Q. What other opportunities are there in the Coast Guard Reserve?

A. Coast Guard Reservists perform the same duties as active duty Coast Guardsmen at Stations and units across the United States.
