1917 -- President Woody Wilson orders federal government to seize the railroads for the duration of WW I. Collectivism!

1967 -- The Beatles self-directed film, "Magical Mystery Tour" premieres on BBC-TV. Audiences are mystified, critics either disappointed or contemptuous.

1972 -- US: A study rates conditions in half of Washington's state prisons to be "inhuman." Only 10% of the prison population is human anyway.

1983: U.S. Information Agency chief Charles Z. Wick, with whose family the Reagans usually spend Christmas eve, denies he ever secretly taped phone conversations. "I've never done it without telling," he says. The next day, he admits that maybe he might have. On January 9th, Richard Nixon's birthday, he apoligizes for having secretly taped "a small percentage" of his phone calls. No scandal, he never had oral sex.

1991 -- Top Gun?: Jack Ruby's gun sells for $220,000 in auction: Almost brand new, only fired once, on a Sunday.

1992 -- Women In Black begin campaign against rape in war, Belgrade, Serbia. Maybe they should have read the bible first: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves".- Numbers 31:17-18.
