I come equipped with a long list of alternate labour positions, various aides including a "birthing ball" big enough to sit upon and rock (sounds intriguing?) lots of comforting words and 10 years of childbirth education knowledge.

There are four or five pre-event meetings with all participants during which a birthing plan is discussed, comfort measures are tried on for size as well as the issue of pain relief.

On-going support for both mom and dad and any willing participants to this celebration.

According to Mothering the Mother, How a Doula Can Help You Have a Short, Easier and Healthier Birth by Kennell, Klaus, and Kennell (1993), having a doula can give you a:
50% reduction in cesarean rates
25% shorter labour
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in oxytocin (pictocin) use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
