Knowing Your Future and Choosing the Right Career Field |
||||||||||||||||||||
I can remember when I was a young girl, I wondered what was I going to be when I grew up; I had no clue. After completing high school, I attended a business college where I studied to be a career secretary and discovered that was not it at all. I then trained and worked as a welder for a couple of years realizing that was not it either. I joined the military and worked in the communication field for 14 years, which I truly enjoyed, but that still wasn't my career fulfillment. I felt I was getting close, but I still was not satisfied with my career. I received a certificate in cosmetology, but my health excluded me from continuing my profession in that field. I am now attending Thomas Nelson Community College to study computer programming. |

I did a career inventory, the Princeton Review Career quiz, and found it to be rather accurate as to what type of person I am. A career inventory is a series of questions focusing on your interests, and giving you an assessment from your answers on what would be a good career field for you to work in. |

The Princeton Career quiz is color coded. It points out your likely interest, which is what you like to do, and your usual style, which is how you like to do it. It stated that I fell under the yellow code, which is schelule activities, do detail work, control work with numbers, and work with systems,but I also have interest in the red code, build and see finished products, solve practical problems, and work through people, organizing. I did two other career quizzes from the Birkman Method Career Style, and their assessments of me are very similar. They both put me in a career field that is people oriented. I feel that I am a people person, but I still have a strong desire to become a computer programmer. One of the Birkman Method Career Style Questionnaires was what career is for you; it was designed to determine how much you relate toward people, data, or things. The other was the career search questionnaire, which are a series of interest questions. |

If you are undecided about what career you should venture into, I feel that doing a career inventory will give you a better perspective on which career road to travel. |
