Treasure Hunts

United States' Art and History

Introduction

The web provides access to thousands of works of art. The aim of this web hunt is to explore some American art, gather some information about the artists, and understand the historical context of the art.

Guiding Question

Your challenge is to come up with multiple answers to this question: In what ways do visual artists reveal the atmosphere and attitudes of their times?

Questions

  1. When did the artist work? Where did he or she work?
  2. What art movement is the artist associated with?
  3. How did the critics respond to the artist's work then?
  4. How do critics respond to the artist's work now?
  5. What work is the artist remembered for? (At least two per artist)
  6. What are three significant events that made headlines during the artist's time period?
  7. What else was going on at the time the artist worked, in terms of technological innovations, literature, etc.?
