Misunderstandings
By: Lupi
Quatre walked down the halls of the Preventers feeling like he was going to pass out. Beads of sweat covered his face, and he was a pale and pasty white. He went into the men's room and looked at himself in the mirror. He turned on a faucet and splashed water on his face.
"Hey Quatre, you look sick, are you okay?" Duo asked, walking into the restroom. Quatre put on his smile.
"I'm okay Duo. Thanks." Quatre said, but Duo saw it quite clearly that he was lying.
"No you're not. You look like crap." Duo said and Quatre smiled and started for the door.
"Really, I'm fine." Quatre said, then he started coughing. Duo frowned.
"Come on buddy. You are sick, you need to go home, or get Kay to come and pick you up."
"Really Duo I'm…" Quatre said, and then Quatre collapsed, Duo quickly caught him and sighed.
"You're a bad liar Quatre man." Duo said and he carried Quatre to the medical staff. Duo passed Trowa, when he saw his friend unconscious in Duo's arms he became worried.
"Duo, is he okay?" Trowa asked.
"He passed out in the men's room. He's coughing and he's got a fever. Call Kay and tell her to come and take him home." Duo said.
"I don't know her work number." Trowa said and Duo smiled.
"Just go into the Q man's office. I'm sure it's written down somewhere." Duo said and he went on with Quatre. Trowa went into Quatre's office.
"Okay, where would he keep her work number?" Trowa asked himself as he searched through his paperwork. Trowa then looked on his phone and there it was on speed dial, Trowa hit the speed dial and got a ring.
"FBI. How may I help you?" asked a man with a deep voice.
"I'm looking for missus Kayley Winner." Trowa said.
"Okay, let me put you through to her supervisor." The man said and then seconds later Trowa got another voice.
"Assassinations department, this is Donna Avalon." Trowa sighed.
"I need to talk to missus Kayley Winner." Trowa said again, and Donna sighed.
"You'll have to wait just a minute. She's doing target practice. When she's done I'll put you through to her." Donna paused, "Who is this anyway, I know this isn't Quatre."
"No, my name is Trowa Barton."
"Oh, is something wrong? No one calls her but Quatre." Donna said and Trowa almost laughed.
"Well Quatre's sick and we think she should come and take him home." Trowa said, Donna gasped.
"Hang on, I'll get her right away." She said and she went to he door of the target practice room and pushed a button and inside the room a red light shined and all the agents shooting stopped. Donna opened the door and all the agents took their earmuffs off. Donna looked directly at Kayley, "Missus Kayley Winner. A mister Trowa Barton is on the phone for you." She said and Kayley's eyes went wide.
"Trowa? Well what does he want?" Kayley asked.
"Your significant other is sick." Donna said and Kayley was silent for a moment, the other agents all looked at her. She went out of the room and Donna took her to the phone.
"Trowa? What's wrong?" she asked.
"Wow, it takes a lot to get you on the phone. Quatre's sick, he passed out in the men's room. Duo's taking care of him. But we wanted you to come and take him home." Trowa explained. Kayley dropped her guns on the floor
"Umm…okay. Crap. Wait…did you say Duo was taking care of him?" she asked.
"Duo took Quatre to medical. He's not personally taking care of Quatre." Kayley sighed.
"Oh, okay. I'll be there as soon as I can." She said and she hung up. Kayley picked up her guns and sighed.
"Is he okay?" Donna asked.
"I have to take him home. He's in medical right now." Kayley said and she sighed, "Okay. Looks like I have to go. Damnit. He'd better be okay." Kayley said and she put her guns in their holsters and laughed, "He's a stubborn guy. When I try to tell him 'Don't go to work today, you look sick.' He says 'No I'm okay.' He's in for it now." She said and she turned to leave.
"See you tomorrow Kayley." Donna said. Kayley left and went to her car.
"Boys are such stubborn asses." She said and she drove the five blocks to the Preventers. She parked next to Quatre's car and walked in. When she reached the floor that Quatre's office was on she looked around for someone to tell her where Quatre was. Then she saw Trowa walking down toward her.
"Oh good you're here." He said and he led her to medical. Quatre was on a bed, lying there unconscious. Kayley smiled at how peaceful he looked, she went to the bedside and leaned over him, wiped the sweat off of his face and kissed forehead.
"Hey there mister Winner. You're a stubborn ass, you know that? See what you get when you don't listen to the voice of reason?" she said and Trowa saw that she had her guns on her.
"Kayley, you can't have any guns in here." He said and she laughed. She took the guns out of their holsters and threw them to him.
"Here, take them." She said and she heard coughing behind her, Quatre was waking up. She turned and looked down at him, he smiled when he saw her.
"Hey…K…Kay. What…what are you…doing here?" he asked, she put her hand on his forehead.
"I'm here to take you home. I told you that you were too sick to go to work. Why do you have to be so stubborn?" she asked, he smiled. Kayley sat him up and moved him to the end of the bed, he fell forward and his head rested on her chest. Duo walked in and laughed.
"Wow, Quatre. I guess you're feeling better." Duo said and Kayley blushed.
"Shut up Duo. Quatre, can you walk?" she asked and Quatre tried to stand up, but fell back onto the bed, "I'll take that as a no." she said and she sighed. She picked him up and he smiled at her.
"Well Kay, at least he won't have a long fall if you drop him." Duo said, teasing her about her height once again.
"Duo please." She said quietly, she was beginning to worry more about her sick husband. Duo heard the seriousness in her voice. She went to the door and looked to Trowa, "Put the guns back in the holsters." She said and he put them in their holsters. Kayley started walking out to the hallway. Heero saw her and stopped.
"You'll take care of him right?" Heero asked, Kayley laughed.
"Yeah Heero. I'll take good care of him…I promise. He'll be fine." She said and Heero smiled.
"Good." He said and he kept walking. She went to the elevator and used her elbow to push the down button. The elevator door opened and she walked in and used her elbow to push the L button. Once they reached the lobby she went out to her car, she put Quatre in the passenger's seat and buckled him in. And then she drove off.
"Quatre, are you awake?"
"Yeah."
"How are you feeling?"
"Like crap."
"Okay, well when we get home I'll make you some tea or do you want soup or what?"
"Tea."
"Okay, and then you can sleep."
"My…two of my sisters…are…are coming today."
"I see. Is that why you didn't want to stay home?"
"Yeah. I didn't want them…to…to think that you don't take care…care of me when I'm sick or…or something." He said.
"All you had to do was ask me to stay home and I would. I'd do anything for you Quatre."
"I know…but I didn't want to trouble you."
"Quatre, Quatre, Quatre. You would never be a trouble to me. Don't ever be afraid to ask me to, in this case, stay home and take care of you. I don't care about work that much, it just gives me something to do with all my years of training…but other than that I don't mind taking days off to take care of you. Work doesn't mean anything to me, you mean everything to me." She said and then she pulled into the driveway of their house. She then took Quatre inside and laid him down on the bed and made sure he was comfortable. She went and started the water for his tea and then put some cold water in a bowl and went into their bedroom and started dabbing a cold washcloth on his warm forehead, "What time are your sisters supposed to come?"
"I don't…don't know. They didn't say."
"Okay." She said and then she heard the kettle whistle, "Oops, I'll be right back." She said and she went to the kettle, "Oh shut up." She said and she turned the burner off and moved the kettle to another burner. Kayley poured some of the hot water into a mug and grabbed a tea bag and put it in the hot water. When the tea bag had been in the hot water long enough she took it out and threw it away and then she took the tea to Quatre. He smiled when she walked in.
"Thank you." He said, Kayley sat down on the bed and handed him the tea.
"You're welcome. Drink it slowly. I'm going to get you some medications." She said and she went into the bathroom to look for some fever medications, all she saw were allergy pills, and pain killers, and her own anti-psychotics. Then in the back she found the fever medications, she read the directions, and found that before Quatre took them he had to eat something. She took the bottle and went to him, "Quatre, you need to eat something before you take these. What do you want, I'll make you anything you want." She said and he thought.
"I don't know."
"Oh you're a big help. How does chicken soup sound to you?"
"Okay." He said and she smiled and went to make him chicken soup.
Once the soup was done Kayley set up a bed table for him and then brought the soup to him and put it on the table.
"Okay Quatre, here ya go." She said and he started eating it. And when he finished she took the table and bowl away, then she gave him a glass of water and two fever pills.
"I don't want to take them."
"Why?"
"I hate taking medication."
"Quatre, it'll make your fever go away. Come on, I hate seeing you sick like this." She said and she sat down next to him, "Please Quatre." She said and he sighed and took the pills.
"There, happy?" he asked.
"Yes, very. Now, did you want me to stay or go?"
"Stay with me."
"Okay." She replied and she sat in bed with him, he wrapped his arms around her waist and held on to her tightly.
"Kay?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I ask you a favor?"
"Of course."
"This is a little silly and childish, but when I was younger, whenever I got sick one of my sisters would read me a story. I was wondering if you could…" he said, but he didn't finish.
"Read you a story?"
"Yeah kinda, if you don't want to that's okay, it's just a silly…" she cut him off.
"I'd love to."
"Really?" he asked, very surprised.
"Sure, and I have just the one." She said and she got out of bed and went under the bed, "I bought it when I first came to earth, I loved this story so much." She found it and dusted it off, "The Little Prince, my favorite."
"I've never heard of that one."
"It's very good. I think you'll like it." Kayley said and she sat next to Quatre and he held on to her waist again, "Now did your sisters read it in any specific way?"
"In Arabic." He answered.
"Okay, I can do that. Stop me if it doesn't make sense, sight translating is hard." She said and she started reading it to him, translating the English into Arabic.
An hour later Serena walked into the house from school. She walked into their bedroom.
"What's going on?" she asked. Kayley stopped and looked at the girl.
"Quatre's sick, and I'm taking care of him." Kayley paused, "Do you have homework?"
"Yes," Serena said, sound very unenthusiastic about her homework, "I'm doing it. Then can I watch TV?"
"Yes, but be quiet about it."
"Okay." Serena went upstairs and Kayley continued reading Quatre the story. Quatre was now holding on to her arm, like she was his only protection, Kayley assumed he was getting worse and was starting to become delusional.
Serena had finished her homework and was watching TV when a knock came at the door, Serena answered and two of Quatre's sisters were there.
"Shhhh. Don't say anything." One of them said, and Serena nodded and went back to the TV. The two sisters went to Quatre and Kayley's bedroom door to see what was going on. They saw Quatre desperately holding on to Kayley, and Kayley reading him 'The Little Prince' in Arabic. Quatre's face was a mix of illness and contentment. Then Quatre started coughing, Kayley put the book down and helped him. Once he stopped coughing she dabbed his forehead again with the washcloth.
"Quatre, you have to let me give you those sleeping pills, you're getting worse." She said to him, he shook his head violently, "Quatre, you're not getting any better." He still shook his head 'no', "Quatre, if you don't take them soon, I'm going to use the sedatives I have from work and that you won't like." She said, but he still shook his head 'no', "What's wrong? What are you so afraid of?"
"Don't leave me." He begged.
"I'm not going anywhere…really Quatre I'm not. But I need you to loosen up, I can't feel my arm." She said, but Quatre didn't let her go. She sighed and picked up the book again and started reading to him in Arabic. Not knowing that her sister-in-laws were watching them.
Once she finished reading the story to Quatre, he had fallen asleep. She detached him from her and laid his head down on the pillow and left the room, closing the door behind her. She went to the kitchen, but then turned around when she realized that there were two women outside their bedroom that she hadn't noticed.
"Oh, umm, hi." Kayley said to the two women.
"Hey." One said, Kayley looked at them.
"Let me guess how long I was oblivious to you two being there. An hour, two hours?" Kayley asked.
"I'm not sure how long really. We were listening to the story you were reading to him. But we came in when he started coughing and asked you not to leave him." The other said, and Kayley sighed, she went into the refrigerator and grabbed a beer.
"Do you want anything Iria?" Kayley asked.
"No I'm okay."
"Ilea, what about you?" Kayley asked, and Ilea shook her head.
"Thank you Kayley, but I'm fine." Ilea said and Kayley astonished that Ilea referred to her by name.
"That book you were reading him, was it already in Arabic?" Iria asked.
"No, it was in English." Kayley answered.
"And you translated it?" Ilea asked.
"Yeah." There was silence, "I know you probably came here to see Quatre, but he's kinda sick right now. As you may have noticed." Kayley said, trying to create conversation.
"You get the feeling in you arm back yet?" Iria asked, Kayley smiled.
"No, not yet. It'll come back eventually. He can have quite a grip when he wants to." Kayley said and both of them smiled.
"He told us you were training him to be stronger, is that true?" Ilea asked, Kayley laughed and took a drink of her beer.
"Yeah."
"Is it working?"
"Yeah, I have the bruises to prove it. He's getting really strong."
"Bruises?" Iria asked.
"Yeah, we spar. And we bruise each other up sometimes."
"Oh, can we see?" Iria asked, and Kayley cocked an eyebrow.
"I guess." Kayley said and she lifted her shirt up a bit to show them the big purple bruise on her abdomen.
"Ouch." They both said at the same time.
"Yeah…if I remember correctly, he beat me that day." Kayley said.
"He did?" Iria asked.
"Yeah, I was sort of unconscious, so I guess that means he won."
"He knocked you out?" Iria asked, sounding surprised at her little brother.
"I think so. I remember the kick to the stomach and then falling backward. I think I hit my head on something and was knocked out. I woke up in our bedroom with him sporting this guilty slash worried look."
"Yeah that's him." Ilea said and Kayley sighed.
"I kinda have a question for you." Kayley said.
"Yes." Ilea said.
"How come not one of you twenty-nine Winner sisters came to your little brother's wedding? I mean I know it was because of me, I know how much you all dislike me, but he was heartbroken when none of you showed up. I had to spend hours with him after the wedding, at the party thing trying to stop him from crying. He was just so crushed, I don't understand." Kayley said and the two sisters looked at one another and sighed.
"It's like you said, it was because of you. We didn't at all agree with his decision to marry you." Iria said, and Kayley sighed deeply.
"That's really too bad that you didn't go. None of our families were there. It was just our friends and the Maganac Corps. Neither of us had family members there."
"None?"
"None at all."
"What about your family?" Ilea asked.
"My family? I…I don't have any family. Quatre is all I have. My mother died after I was born, my grandparents commit suicide, my father killed my uncle, and I killed my father and my aunt and my other uncle. My mother's family in Ireland would never accept me and my father's family is all gone."
"You killed…" Iria said and Kayley knew what she was thinking about.
"There were special circumstances to that. I had no other choice. It was either kill them or they killed me and Quatre and the other pilots." Kayley explained.
"I'm not sure I understand." Iria said.
"You think that I killed people because I liked to. But in truth there was a whole family commissioned to turn one man's daughter into the perfect assassin. I had no choice. I did it because in truth, I was afraid of getting killed by my father. I did all of that killing because I was afraid of my father and what he'd do to me if I didn't kill those people." Kayley explained, "I know that some of you email him asking if he's divorced me or whatever, but if he did that, I'd be alone without anyone. He is all I have…if I lost him; I really don't know what I'd do." She said and she sighed and went back to the bedroom. She opened the door and found that Quatre was awake, "Quatre, that's it man. I'm going to have to sedate you. You refuse to sleep." She said and she turned to get the sedatives.
"Don't go!" Quatre pleaded, "Please don't leave me!"
"I'll be right back."
"No, stay with me." He begged, Kayley sighed and went to his side. He held on to her waist, and gently cried into her back.
"Quatre? What's wrong?"
"Don't leave me, please." He said and she sighed.
"Will one of you go into my car, in the glove compartment is a small case with big yellow letters that say FBI. Can you bring it to me?" she asked and Iria left to get the case. Quatre's arms tightened around Kayley's waist, "Oww, Quatre, this is starting to hurt. Loosen up." She said, but Quatre held on. Iria came back with the case and handed it to Kayley. She opened it and used a syringe and was about to sedate Quatre, "Quatre, listen to me very carefully. I'm going to put this in your arm, it'll hurt for only a minute and then you will fall asleep. When you wake up you should feel a little better." She said and she gently stuck the needle into Quatre's arm and pushed the liquid into his bloodstream. Quatre fell asleep.
"Wow, he's really sick." Ilea commented, Kayley unwrapped Quatre's arms from around her waist and put him in a normal sleeping position. Kayley leaned over him for a minute, and wiped away the tears on his face.
"What is he so afraid of?" Kayley asked herself.
"It would seem that he is afraid of losing you." Ilea said and Kayley kissed Quatre and sat on the bed.
"He knows I'm not going to leave him." Kayley paused, and then looked to her two sister-in-laws, "So, are you hungry? I can make almost whatever you want." Kayley said and the two women looked at one another, "Or I can get us some pizza. Donna owes me a favor anyway."
"Pizza sounds great." Serena said from the living room.
"No one asked you munchkin!" Kayley said and Ilea and Iria laughed.
"Pizza is fine." Iria said, and Kayley smiled.
"Okay. Lemme call Donna, she should still be at her office." Kayley said and she picked up the phone and dialed her work, "Hey there Josh, what's happening?" Kayley asked.
"Nothing much kid, what can I do for you?" asked a man at the FBI.
"Can you put me through to Donna?"
"Sure thing kid." He said and Kayley waited.
"Kid?" Ilea asked.
"I'll tell you later, Hey Donna?"
"Oh hey Kayley, how's Quatre?"
"He's asleep, I had to resort to sedatives. Listen I'm calling to ask you a favor."
"What is it?"
"Can you maybe pick up two large pizzas and a case of beer and bring it over to my place?" Kayley asked.
"Umm, sure." Donna said, "I'll be there in twenty." And they hung up.
"Okay, food problem solved. How long are you two going to be here? There's plenty of rooms for you to sleep in." Kayley said.
"We were only going to stay for a day, but under the circumstances a few more days can't hurt, besides you look like you could use help with Quatre." Iria said and Kayley smiled.
"Thanks. Does this mean you'll be nice to me?" Kayley asked. Iria and Ilea looked at one another.
"I think maybe we misunderstood you. You really love him, and you've taken very good care of him, I think we may have judged you too harshly." Iria said and Kayley smiled.
"Yeah." Ilea said in response.
"Well thanks, that really makes me feel better."
"So why did that guy call you kid?" Iria asked, and Kayley laughed.
"Oh that. Well, at the FBI, they call me kid, boss, and a lot of other stuff you don't wanna know about and stuff I can't repeat in public. But kid is because I'm the shortest and smallest agent there. And because no one believes me when I tell them I'm older than I look, they think I'm fifteen or something."
"Oh, well that's cute." Iria said and Kayley looked at her with a curious look.
"Cute? Whatever you say." Kayley said, "I'll be right back." She said and she went into the bedroom and closed the door, Iria and Ilea looked at one another and shrugged. They went to the door and each put an ear up to the door to listen.
"Hey there Quatre. You'll be surprised to hear this; your sisters are being nice to me. It's amazing…and they're going to stay for a few days, so you had better get better soon. Maybe next time you'll listen to me when I tell you you're too sick to go to work." Kayley said and then she paused, "You're all sweaty and disgusting." Then Kayley took the washcloth and dabbed it on his forehead, Quatre was still sleeping peacefully, "Goodness Quatre, you're still warm, but the fever seems to be going down. At least it's going down." She said and she went into the bathroom and grabbed an orange medicine bottle and opened it. She took a pill out and stared at it, "It's funny, this little pill is what keeps me on this side of sanity. Bloody hell…if I didn't take these pills I'd be in the insane asylum, and that wouldn't be good." She said and she took the pill and left the bathroom. Ilea and Iria looked at one another.
"On this side of sanity?" Iria asked, Ilea shrugged.
"I don't know. Maybe she's mentally ill." Ilea said, but that didn't seem like an option to them.
"Nah, how could she be mentally ill? She's fine, she's probably talking about something else." Iria said. Then as the two sisters listened at the door, the front door of the house burst open and four boys ran in.
"Where's the Q man?" Duo asked, and the sisters looked at them and pointed to the door, "Let's see how he's doing." Duo said and he opened the door and found Quatre sleeping and Kayley changing her clothes. Her shirt was off and she was getting ready to put another shirt on. She looked and saw Duo at the door.
"Duo! What the hell are you doing?" she yelled, and Duo blushed and closed the door.
"Shit! Umm…she's…she's changing." Duo said and Iria and Ilea laughed, Heero looked at him.
"I'd hide if I were you." Heero said and Duo ran and hid behind Wufei. Kayley walked out of the room, looking very unhappy. She stood in the doorway with her arms folded across her chest.
"Duo? Have you ever heard of knocking? It is a common custom here in the Sanq kingdom." She said, and Wufei stepped aside and Duo was standing alone.
"I'm sorry Kay, I didn't know you were changing, how can I make it up to you?" Duo asked and Kayley smiled at him. Kayley went up to him and smacked him on the back of the head, "Oww, that hurt."
"You deserved it."
"I know." Duo said and Kayley looked at the four pilots standing in the house.
"So what are you doing here?" Kayley asked.
"We're here to see how Quatre is doing." Trowa said and Kayley nodded.
"Okay, well he's asleep right now." Kayley answered and Heero saw a telltale glint in her eye.
"You sedated him didn't you?" Heero asked, and Kayley sighed.
"I had to, he wouldn't sleep, and he was getting delusional." She said and Heero peered his head into the bedroom and saw Quatre, he sleeping somewhat peacefully, beads of sweat on his forehead and he was coughing occasionally.
"He was?" Trowa asked.
"Yeah. But he should be okay when he wakes up. I gave he him some medicine. But with my sedatives he won't wake up until sometime tomorrow." Kayley said, then she hit herself in the head, "Oh, stupid head! I didn't introduce you to two of Quatre's sisters. Iria and Ilea these are some of the Preventers, this is Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Wufei Chang and Trowa Barton." She said and the two sisters smiled.
"Hi." They said at the same time. Then Donna opened the door and came in with pizza and beer. Duo smiled and took the beer from Donna and put it on the dining room table.
"Donna, hey."
"Hello missus Winner."
"Donna?" Kayley asked irritably, Donna laughed.
"Kayley, sorry. I'm just used to it."
"You're higher ranking than I am. You shouldn't be used to it." Kayley said and Donna laughed.
"You're deadlier than I am."
"That's true. I can't argue with you there." Kayley commented, and she took the hot pizzas from Donna and put them on the table, "Pizza! Come and get it guys!" Kayley said and immediately Duo grabbed a large piece of pizza and started eating. Kayley got plates for Ilea, Iria and Serena. She handed them the plates and took for herself a piece.
{The next morning}
The sun was shining in on Kayley as she slept next to Quatre. Kayley's hand was holding on to Quatre's and their fingers were entangled. Kayley's eyes opened and she was looking at the side of Quatre's head, she slowly sat herself up and looked around.
"Wow, that was a painful dream." She said as she sat up completely and looked down at the sleeping Arabian next to her. She put her hand on his head to feel if his fever had gone away, "Well you're not as warm as you were yesterday, that's a good sign." She said and she kissed his cheek, "If I get sick, I'm blaming you." She said and she got out of bed and stretched, her back cracked, "Oww." Kayley went into the bathroom and got a shower going, she took off her t-shirt and boxers and stepped inside. The hot water beating down on her was soothing enough that she wanted to go back to sleep. When she was finished she wrapped a towel around her body dried herself off. Kayley brushed her hair and put some clothes on. She then sat down on the bed and ran her fingers through the sleeping Quatre's hair.
An hour went by and Kayley sat with her sleeping husband, she soon fell asleep herself. Quatre opened his eyes to the harsh sun pouring in the window; he squeezed his eyes shut and turned his head. Then he felt a small hand on his head and he opened his eyes and saw that Kayley was sitting with her hand on him, he smiled slightly. He sat up and looked at the small woman, her pale face relaxed in sleep, her curly hair wet in some places and dry in other places.
"How did I get such a wonderful person in my life? I definitely don't deserve her at all." Quatre thought and he placed his head in her lap and wrapped his arms around her tiny waist, "I love you." He tried to say, but he found that his voice didn't quite work, his throat was dry and it hurt to talk, he didn't want to wake Kayley up to ask her for water, so he decided to get it himself. He climbed out of bed, careful not to make any noise, as he stood he found his legs fell like jell-o and he had a hard time standing. He made his way to the bathroom and filled the cup with water and drank it slowly. When he finished the water he made his way back to the bed and got back into the position he was in, with his head on her lap and his arms around her waist. Then a knock came at the door and Quatre sighed, "Yes?" he asked in a hoarse voice.
"Quatre it's me Iria." Iria said and Quatre sighed again.
"Come in." he said, his voice still rasping, the door opened and Iria walked into the room and smiled.
"How are you feeling today Quatre?" she asked and Quatre half smiled at his sister.
"Better."
"That's good. You know, you've got a great girl Quatre. She's one in a million. She's not who we thought she was. She's very kind and sweet and funny. She's got an amazing sense of responsibility and has taken very good care of you." Iria paused, "I'm sorry Quatre." She said but Quatre didn't understand.
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I'm sorry I didn't go to the wedding. I'm sorry that I didn't believe when you told me that she was not a bad person. I'm sorry I hurt you." She said and Quatre smiled.
"It's okay Iria." Quatre said silence filled the room, Quatre looked at Kayley as she slept, "She usually wakes up when someone walks into the room, she must be having that dream again."
"What dream is that?"
"It this recurring dream she always has and it sometimes wakes her up at night, it's very haunting to her."
"What is it about Quatre?" Iria asked and Quatre looked up at Kayley.
"Kay's about fourteen, she's walking through a desolate neighborhood, one in which she destroyed, she's walking through the street, smoke rising from the ruined houses. She stops and she's standing still, the wind blows and ashes fly into her face, they get into her eyes and it burns. She walks on past the bodies of dead people…mothers holding their children, couples hanging on to one another, children holding their dolls, old couples holding hands. She walks to what used to be a playground, where the dead bodies of children adorn the burning swings and other play areas, she wants to cry, but tears won't come. She bent down in what used to be a sandbox, she starts writing with her finger 'I'm sorry'. She takes a gun out of her pocket and puts it to her temple; she pulls the trigger letting the gun take her away from the destruction she caused, the families she destroyed, the lives she ended. But the gun didn't work. It wouldn't fire. She threw the gun, and then a faint cry catches her ear and she sees a small boy of maybe four or five, lying on the ground, very close to death. She went to him, he was crying for his mother. When Kay asked him where his mother was, he pointed to a dead woman a few feet away, she held the boy tightly, his little fingers started to twirl her hair, but even through all this she couldn't cry. She apologized to the boy for what she had done, the boy smiled and kissed her cheek, and then he died. She stared at the dead boy in her arms, his face, though dirty and burned, showing an everlasting forgiveness. She couldn't let the boy go, but she had to, she laid him back down on the ground, took out a knife from her back pocket and cut a lock of his hair, went and actually bought a small piece of ribbon, tied it around the lock of his hair and placed it in an envelope and has kept it with her ever since." Quatre explained in a very hoarse voice. Iria stared at her little brother's wife, then Quatre started coughing and Kayley's eyes opened and she looked down at him. Kayley blinked a few times to adjust her vision.
"You're…awake." She said sleepily.
"Yeah." He said and she smiled.
"How do you feel?"
"Better."
"Good." She said and she sat and looked out the window and watched the clouds.
"You had that dream again didn't you?" Quatre asked her with a raspy voice; she looked down at his face.
"What?" she asked.
"That dream, you've been having it all month."
"Umm…yeah I did." Kayley answered him and Quatre sighed.
"I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" then she paused, "You didn't kill them, I did. And there always will be no logical need to kill all those innocent people. They didn't have to die. There was a way around it, and I knew that. But I couldn't disobey orders…I could only suggest other means of operation. But he wouldn't listen; he made me kill all those people…and that boy." Kayley paused again, "Anyone hungry?" she asked, quickly changing the subject.
"Kay?" Quatre asked in an annoyed voice.
"Are you hungry? And don't give me that attitude mister Winner, I know where you sleep." She said, not taking the situation as seriously as Quatre thought she would.
"Yeah sure." Quatre said and Kayley smiled.
"Good, Iria do you want anything? My cooking skills are a little lacking, but it is edible…and I swear it won't kill you." Kayley said and Iria chuckled.
"I'm sure it'll be fine. Yes, I'm a little hungry. Thank you." Iria said and Kayley got out of bed and went to Quatre's side. Quatre sat up and moved to the edge of the bed.
"Can you walk yet?" she asked him, he nodded and got onto his feet. As he stood he swayed from side to side before getting his balance, "Okay, come on." They walked out to the dining room where Quatre took the first seat he could and sat down, "Quatre, are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. You worry too much Kay." He said and Kayley smiled and went to the kitchen to begin making breakfast.
"You're right. I guess I'm just paranoid." She went through the cabinets to see what she could make for breakfast.
"In truth Kay, I feel awful. I don't want to burden you with my problems. But I feel sick as hell, and everything aches." Quatre thought and he stood up, "I'm going to lie down on the couch, lemme know when breakfast is ready." He said and he hobbled over to a couch in the den and relaxed on the couch. He closed his eyes and before he knew it he had fallen asleep.
Quatre was walking through a large open field; the smell of the grass filled Quatre's nose. There were trees scattered about the wide abyss of the world he was in. In the distance Quatre saw a flowerbed and what looked like a person lying down in the flowers. He walked toward the flowers; they were farther away than he thought. As he got closer he definitely saw a body, lying on its side. As he got even closer he identified it as a woman, and he knew just who that woman was.
"Kay," he called, but his voice seemed to be lost in the abyss, he walked closer and when he reached her he knew it was her, "Kay." He said and he put his hand on her shoulder, she rolled onto her other side, he saw that she was fast asleep, "I'll just let her sleep." He said and then her arm moved and her hand held his hand. Kayley opened her eyes slowly, and examined her surroundings.
"Quatre?" she asked sleepily and Quatre smiled, her voice was a like a soft bell.
"Hey my love." He said, Kayley sat up and looked into his eyes. She was wearing a long white gown and though she was sleeping on a flowerbed her dress was still perfect.
"I've been waiting for you. I have something to tell you." She said and Quatre held her hand tighter.
"What is it?" he asked and Kayley sighed, as though what she was going to say was very hard.
"I know that you're lying to me…you are very sick. If you don't tell me that you're sick, I may lose you. You need real medical help, if you don't get help it will only spiral downhill from there…and…and I could lose you forever." She said and Quatre was stunned by her words.
"What, Kay what are you talking about?" he asked and she leaned in closer to him.
"You have to trust me Quatre. Please trust me." She begged him; she kissed his forehead, "Don't think that telling me you're sick is dumping your problems. I love you and I will do all I can to help you in any way you need help." She said and Quatre felt himself being pulled back.
"Quatre, Quatre wake up." Came the voice that Quatre had grown to love. He opened his eyes weakly and stared up at the girl that was his wife.
"Oh hey." He said and she smiled.
"Hey, food is ready whenever you are."
"Okay." He said and he tried to get up, but found it was hard, Kayley saw him struggle and went to help him.
"Oh Quatre, let me help you." She said and she helped him walk to the table, "He's looking worse than yesterday. Why won't you tell me what's wrong? Jesus Christ Quatre please tell me what's wrong." She thought and a tear fell from her eyes and she quickly wiped it away. Kayley went and kissed Quatre's cheek; he held her head close to his with his hand.
"Hal mumkin tusaAHidnee." [Can you help me?] Quatre whispered in her ear in Arabic, she smiled in relief.
"NaAHm." [Yes.] she answered him back and he sighed.
"IttaSil bi-duktoor." [Get a doctor.] he said and she sighed.
"Hasanan." [Okay.] she answered and he let her go and she went to the phone and called the doctor. She started talking to the doctor and telling her all of Quatre's symptoms.
"She speaks Arabic?" Iria asked and Quatre smiled.
"She speaks almost every language in existence, and even some dead languages too. She's very, very smart." Quatre said and Iria's eyes went wide.
"Wow." Then they saw Kayley hang up the phone and bury her face in her hands.
"Come on Quatre, we're going to the hospital. Serena, go put some shoes on."
"Can I stay here? I hate hospitals."
"Okay fine. But be good."
"Why?" Quatre asked.
"You may have gotten something from that colony you visited last week, they have a lot of bad illnesses there, and if it goes untreated it could kill you." She said and she went to Quatre to help him up.
"What might it be?" Iria asked.
"For the life of me I could never say it. It's a medical term, and I definitely don't speak doctor." She said and Iria laughed.
"Will you need help?"
"Umm, yeah, if you would be so kind as to drive us there, I'd appreciate it." Kayley said as she picked Quatre up and went to the door.
"I'd love to, but what about Ilea?"
"Umm, we can leave her a note, apparently she sleeps late, have her meet us at the hospital. I wanna get him there as soon as possible."
"I understand, take him to the car and I'll leave her a note." Iria said and Kayley nodded and took Quatre out to the car.
"It's okay Quatre. You'll be just fine." She reassured and Quatre smiled.
"Thank you." He said weakly, Quatre took her hand and held it tightly, "You won't leave me alone with them will you?" he asked nervously.
"Quatre, I have to do what the doctor tells me. If she doesn't want me in there then I can't be in there." She said and Quatre's face seemed to show despair, "Quatre I'm sorry, I have to do what the doctor tells me to." Then Iria climbed into the driver's seat and they drove off.
"You can't leave me Kay." Quatre said and he held her hand tighter.
"I'm not going to leave you Quatre, just calm down." She said and she ignored the lack of feeling in her fingers, "I have to call the guys and let them know what's going on." she used her free hand to take out her cell phone and dialed Duo first because she knew he'd be awake.
"Hello?" came Duo's cheerful voice.
"Hey Duo, look I don't know when the others wake up, but can you get the message around that I'm taking Quatre to the hospital?"
"You are? Okay, yeah I'll tell them. Did you want us to meet you there?" he asked and Kayley looked down to Quatre.
"Yeah I think he'd like that very much." She said and Duo sighed.
"He's doing bad?"
"He was better this morning but then he seemed to get worse, I called the doctor and she told me what it might be and told me to take him to the hospital. We're on our way to the hospital right now."
"Okay, I'll call the guys. We'll be there eventually. And if Heero or Wufei find a way to kill me over the phone it's all your fault." Kayley laughed.
"I will take full responsibility if you get killed. Thanks Duo."
"Sure babe, take care of the Q man."
"I will. See you soon. Bye." She ended the call and looked down at the now sleeping Quatre, "The Q man? Whatever." They drove up the hospital and Iria stopped the car, Kayley opened the door and climbed out of the car and then picked Quatre up, a nurse ran to her looked at Quatre.
"Are you missus Winner?" she asked and Kayley turned around to look at her.
"Yes."
"Come with me." She said and Kayley slowly followed the fast-paced nurse, they walked inside the hospital where there was a doctor waiting for them, "Doctor Andrews, missus Winner is here with mister Winner."
"Good, hello Kayley. How's he doing?"
"I don't know. He's getting warmer again, I'm afraid his fever may be coming back. But I'm not a doctor and I don't presume to be one either." Kayley said and Dr. Andrews smiled.
"Well you both need to come with me. You've probably been in a lot of contact with him and you could get it. And it's not a pleasant disease."
"I got that, but Iria will be coming in, I need to let her know what's going on. I'll be right there." Kayley said and she met up with Iria to explain to her what was going on. Then she made her way back to the doctor.
"Okay Kayley, listen he should be okay as long as he stays on medication. I want to keep both of you here for observation."
"Okay." Dr. Andrews sat her on a bed and rolled up Kayley's sleeve.
"I have a few shots to give you and then you'll be drowsy for a while, but it should keep it from getting worse if you've got it. And it keeps you from being contagious."
"Okay." Kayley said and Doctor Andrews began injecting her with various medications.
[2 hours later]
"Okay where is he?" Duo asked Iria when he ran into the lobby. Iria stood up and greeted them with a weak smile.
"They're both in the room over there."
"Why both?" Trowa asked and Duo panicked.
"She didn't get sick too did she?"
"Oh, no, no, no. She's been with him since she brought him home and they don't want her getting sick." Iria explained and they all seemed relieved.
"Do you know how he's doing?" Heero asked and Iria shrugged.
"I think he's getting worse. I asked the doctor what it was he had and she said it was legionnaire's disease."
"What's that?" Trowa asked.
"Well if I remember correctly it a bacterial lung infection that causes fever, coughing, chest pain and weakness."
"Oh." Duo said, "He'll be okay, right?"
"Yes Duo, he should be just fine."
[2 days later]
Kayley was lying on the hospital bed staring at the ceiling. She had been stuck on that bed for two days; Dr. Andrews would not let her get up. She wanted to be one hundred percent sure that Kayley wasn't infected. Which she knew she wasn't.
"Come on Quatre, wake up." She whispered and turned onto her side to watch him. He was looking much better than days before. Color was back in his face and he was no longer sweating, he coughed only once in a while and all around he looked much healthier.
"Kayley, good morning." Came Dr. Andrews' voice.
"Good morning. How is he?" she asked and Dr. Andrews smiled.
"He's fine. When he wakes up he can leave."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Thank god. I was going crazy from boredom."
I can understand that. But you've been checked out and you're just fine, you did contract it, but we got to it early enough to stop it from getting worse."
"Good." Then the figure in the bed across the room moved. He opened his eyes, and had no real clue at to where he was.
"Kay?" he asked, hoping she was there.
"That's me." She said and Quatre's head turned in the direction of the voice. He smiled when he saw her.
"Hi."
"It's about time you woke up. Goodness, I've been stuck here for days." She said and Quatre laughed, "All joking aside. How are you?"
"Much better."
"Good, and if you ever scare me like that again I'll hurt you."
"Okay."
"Well mister and missus Winner. You are both perfectly healthy and you can leave any time you want." The doctor Andrews left the room
"Thank doc." Kayley said and Quatre suddenly looked worried, "What?"
"Did you get sick?"
"No, they just checked me to make sure I didn't get sick. I didn't actually get sick though. So don't worry your blonde little head." She paused, "Well, you wanna leave or what?" Quatre sat up.
"Yeah." He climbed out of bed and Kayley took his hand, they walked out of the room.
"Your sisters are at home waiting for you." Kayley informed him, he sighed.
"They didn't give you a hard time did they?"
"No, not at all. They've been very nice to me."
[The next day]
"Kayley come here, we want to give you something." Ilea said from the couch, where she and Iria were looking through a photo album they brought. Kayley walked in from the kitchen.
"Yes."
"These are for you. We were saving these for Quatre's wedding day, as a gift to his wife. And that's you." Iria said and she handed Kayley the album, Kayley sat in an armchair and opened it up. Inside were baby pictures of Quatre.
"Aww, he's so cute!" she said and Quatre walked in and looked over Kayley's shoulder and gasped.
"Where did you get these?" he asked, panic-stricken.
"A gift to me from your ever loving sisters."
"I told you to burn those!" he exclaimed.
"Why? You looked so cute."
"Quatre you only told us to burn them because you hated the idea of getting married." Ilea said and Kayley looked up at him and smiled.
"Really? And why did you change your mind?"
"Because I love you, that's why. And if you want another reason, you have to wait 'til later."
"Funny." Kayley whispered, and he kissed her ear, "So now I have blackmail photos?" Kayley asked her sister-in laws.
"Yeah. There's some good blackmail pictures in there." Ilea said and Quatre was none too happy about the turn of events.
"Ilea, don't give her ideas. You have no clue of the things she could come up with to get me to do." He said and Kayley smiled evilly.
"Well Quatre, you're right we don't know and we don't want to know." Iria said. Kayley laughed.
"Quatre, we'll figure this out later." Kayley said and Quatre was already nervous about what she might have him do, "Oh Quatre don't worry. It'll be fun, I promise."
