Chapter 2 - Reality
Wufei walked down the pink and blue floral hallway. It was hideous as far as he was concerned. He put his motel card in the door, and opened the it. The five pilots were all sharing a room. Wufei didn't even know how they all had come to share accommodations. Perhaps it was a technique used so they all knew where each other were and would communicate better. Or maybe it was to save money because the doctors were all cheap bastards. There was barely enough room for them all. In one room, there was a large television and two single beds, then in an attached room, there was a 'living room' with a coffee maker, sink, refrigerator, television and couch, then another room with a queen sized bed and a television.
Wufei had gotten the queen sized bed all to himself. Quatre had bought a blow up bed, that he used in the living room, where Trowa slept on the couch. Duo and Heero had the two single beds. Wufei had to go through the living room before he was able to reach his room, so inevitably, he had to pass Quatre before he could reach the solitude of his room.
"Where's Duo?" Quatre asked nearly slipping as he tried to stand on top of the mattress(1).Wufei shook his head. "What?" Quatre asked, both concerned and confused.
"He's probably in some other motel somewhere," Wufei angrily suggested.
"But..." Quatre seemed only more confused.
"He's with a girl that he met at the club," Wufei clarified.
"Oh," Quatre blushed slightly and sat back down on his bed, "So you didn't get to talk to him."
"He doesn't believe there's a problem," Wufei sighed.
"He's in denial?" Quatre asked with utmost concern and empathy.
"Do we even know that there is a real problem?" Wufei shot back. Quatre looked down in hurt. Wufei knew that he shouldn't have snapped like that. Quatre was only trying to be a good friend, but Wufei was so frustrated with the situation that he wasn't aware of what he was doing. He hated being frustrated, he lost his temper when he was frustrated. That was one of the reasons why he preferred being alone, because he didn't have to deal with complicated situations like this. "He told me he had acquired some medication to help him."
"But what happens if it continues?" Quatre asked.
"We can't force him to do anything, its his life, let him handle it. He'll come to us when he needs us," Wufei tried to escape into his room, but before he closed the door, he heard Quatre say one last thing.
"Will he?"

The early morning sunlight sifted into the small motel room. Duo shot awake. He was covered in sweat and he had dark circles under his eyes. "Isis?"
There was no sign of the girl, though there was elevated humidity in the air, indicating that she had recently taken a shower. Duo sighed. He didn't expect her to be there, but he had been thinking about taking her to get some coffee. Duo hopped out of bed and ran to the shower. The room was cold, and his sweat soaked body only made things worse.
Duo made a point of taking a very long shower. He liked the heat, and the relaxation. He just let the water beat down on him for several minutes, just soaking it in. He kept his mind clear, not thinking at all, just feeling the warmth of the water. Thinking was way overrated.
After Duo was done his shower he stepped out and grabbed a towel to begin the long and tedious task of drying his hair. He was standing in front of the mirror rubbing the towel throughout his hair when he felt a cool breeze. The bathroom door had cracked open.
Duo turned to close it, when he saw a glimpse of Isis pass by the door. He was in luck, maybe she had forgotten something, now he could finally asked her to have a cup of coffee with him.
Duo stuck his head out the door, but he was just in time to see the door to the room close. Duo tried calling after her, but she didn't hear him. Or did she?
Duo sighed and went back to drying his hair. It took only a few more minutes before his hair was in a damp braid. Duo found his clothes and left the room in a messy and disoriented shape. He didn't care, that's why they had maids.
While Duo was casually strolling down the long hall, he passed two police officers. Obviously Duo didn't want to stop and chat with them, but Duo told himself to remain calm. If they were looking for him, they would have sent in OZ soldiers, not rookie trainee cops. After all, he was one of the five most wanted terrorists on Earth.
Still, Duo decided to leave through the back door. Gracefully hopping into the car, he smoothly drove it out of the parking lot and onto a back road. It would take a few more minutes to get back to the motel, but he didn't want to have to face any police officers.
As Duo drove, he thought about Isis. He could barely have a moment's peace without her gorgeous face plaguing his thoughts. They both wanted a one night stand, it was over. But still Duo couldn't get her or their night of passion out of his head.
Duo found himself driving faster and faster. Duo rolled down the window and let the air rush past his face. He tried to clear his thoughts by turning up the music. He bent over and found a heavy rock station and smiled. He loved the song that was on, it was the same song that he had heard the night before with Wufei. He grinned inwardly.
He lifted his eyes to see the road ahead of him. It was then that he saw Isis, standing in the middle of the road, her head shot up to meet his, and her eyes went wide, just as the car sped towards her. Duo slammed on the breaks and tried to swerve the car out of the way. Duo closed his eyes as he waited for the embrace of impact, but it never came.
Duo sat in his seat, the car halfway off the road. Duo panted uneasily as he tried to slow his heart beat. He could of sworn that Isis had been right there. He was so infatuated with her that he was starting to hallucinate. Duo shook his head and put the car into reverse.
Minutes later, he was parking at the motel. He checked himself in the review mirror. He looked paler than usual, and in desperate need of coffee. He could deal with that. Duo jumped out of the car and found himself in his room in a short time.
Duo flopped down on his bed, the closest one to the door. Heero sat, typing on his lap top on the bed beside Duo. Duo searched for the remote control for the television. He soon found it and turned on the tv, and flipped to the news. Heero glared at him.
"What? No cartoons this time! It's the news, you know, OZ watch!" Duo defended nonchalantly.
"Where were you?" Heero already knew the answer.
"You know where I was," Duo flipped absently through an old manga, trying to distract himself from the responsibility lecture that Heero was trying to give him, using as few words as possible.
"What were you thinking?" Heero asked in his most condescending tone that he could muster. Which so happened to be the same tone he used for everything else.
"I was thinking that she was hot," Duo laughed and flipped the page, ignoring anything else that Heero was going to say.
"Duo," Duo's eyes peered over the manga and saw Wufei standing at the doorway that adjoined the two rooms.
Duo dropped the magazine and held up a finger to indicate for Wufei to wait. He then proceeded to pick up the phone and dial room service, "Hi, could I have three packages of complimentary coffee?" Duo asked and his face perked up, "Room 142. Thanks!" Duo put down the phone, and smiled, "You can bitch at me as soon as I get my coffee."
"I wasn't going to bitch," Wufei denied, although if Duo hadn't said anything, he probably would have.
"Yes, we believe you Wufei," Duo sarcastically remarked.
"Quatre was worried," Wufei informed Duo who had now directed his attention to the television.
"Yeah, everyone seems to be worrying about me nowadays," Duo gave Wufei a mock glare, but broke out laughing, "You guys are so tense! Loosen up man!"
"What? As loose as your morals?" Wufei replied calmly.
"Hey, you wouldn't be saying that if you were in my position, you're just jealous," Duo put his hands behind his head and laid back.
Wufei narrowed his eyes, "Did you get to show her all the wonders of the drunken lover?"
"I wasn't THAT drunk," Duo rolled his eyes and then started giggling, "Okay, maybe I was..."
"Would both of you shut up?" Heero asked uninterested in the mock fight. Just as Heero said that, there was a light knock on the door.
"COFFEE!" Duo yelled and jumped off the bed, nearly tripping over himself. He raced to the door and greedily accepted the bags of coffee and sugar.
Duo went to the coffee maker and began making a huge pot, "Who else wants some?" Duo asked, his eyes lighting up.
"You scare me," Wufei simply stated and left the room, leaving Duo laughing and shaking his head. Heero groaned and tried to focus on his work. Duo just sat down with his coffee and poured loads of milk and sweetener into it, casually watching the morning news.
"We have a mission," Heero caught Duo off guard.
"What is it?" Duo asked, shoving his coffee onto the night stand and jumping onto Heero's bed happily.
"Tonight, dusk, base fifty kilometers south southeast. They are planning on shipping thirty mobile suits to L3 tomorrow morning, and we have to stop it," Heero typed in a few commands and within moments, the details to the mission were being printed up by the printer that Heero had hooked up by the window.
"Great, can't wait to kick some ass," Duo grinned wickedly.
"Just make sure you aren't drunk or hung over," Heero glared.
"Do I look hung over?" Duo asked smiling, "Don't answer that," Duo quickly added. Heero only turned back to his incessant typing.
Duo read the eight page long print out on the basics of the mission. It was mostly general information, the rest was up to Heero and Duo to plan themselves. This was going to be fun. Duo pulled out a suit case from under his bed and hoisted it up onto his bed. Opening it, Duo revealed a large assortment of weapons.
As Duo was cleaning one of his semi-automatic guns, he heard the name of the city that they were staying in, Lawson. Duo glanced up, not truly interested.
"Only a few hours ago, tragedy struck the heart of the nation, as the daughter of Dr. Croug, a renowned psychologist and active pacifist leader, was killed in a car crash outside a motel. Isis Croug was apparently hit by the motorist and died later in the hospital. Because of the status of her father, the motorist has been detained by the police for questioning in order to ensure that this is not another terrorist act. When Dr. Croug was questioned, he said that he "believed that it was a horrible accident" and "will not be going to the L3 pacifist convention" as earlier planned. A press meeting will be held tomorrow where more details of the investigation will be released. The police will not reveal anymore details of the investigation. In other news, Relena Peacecraft..." Duo didn't hear the rest. All he could think about was Isis.
He hadn't hit her on the road earlier that morning. He knew that he hadn't, they even said that they had the motorist detained.
Isis was dead. She was dead. Dead dead dead. Duo felt the nausea wash over him swiftly. Heero turned to Duo, "Are you alright?"
"Isis was the girl that I stayed with last night," Duo stared off at the wall. He didn't know what he was supposed to feel. He didn't know what he was supposed to do. He had slept with her hours before she died. Duo put his head in his hands. Wufei was right. The stress didn't go away.
