The Turning

Chapter 4: Home

I chased after Daemon until he reached the large red oak doors at the end of the hall. He opened the massive things and it was like I was in a totally different world. Imagine this, there is this huge round room, and it even has a dome for a roof. The walls were packed with all these old dusty books. There was even this large oriental rug on the floor. Everything was wood, and it was so weird.

Who were these people? Besides terrible decorators.

There were several doors, maybe six. It took a moment for me to coordinate myself. All the doors looked alike. Daemon was already heading for one of the doors across the room, near the fireplace. Dammit. Why did this place have to make me feel so small?

I followed Daemon, trying to get his attention, but he was like a stone wall. I growled in frustration. What a way to make someone feel welcome.

When he opened up the door, it led to a large white room. I was in a kitchen. Yum.

Finally, something that I knew. Food. There were several other people sitting around a large marble island in the center of the room, around them were tons of cupboards and stoves surrounding the place.

Suddenly I felt a little uncomfortable. I was still in the pj's and slippers that they gave me.

Daemon looked at me for a moment and then grunted. He sat down at the table. The only free chair was beside him, and he was starting to creep me out. It was like he was dead or something. I had had enough of dead people.

"Ferra, glad you could join us," Riever smiled. I felt a slight blush creep up my cheeks. Just what I wanted. I sat down and Riever winked at me. Dammit, why did he have to be that cute? "The big PMSing ogre that you are sitting beside is Daemon," Riever began, and got quite a nasty glare from Daemon, "and then to your left is Kara, the little bitch from hell. We call her Kitty to piss her off."

Kara, or should I say Kitty, was quick to react and took a knife off of her place mat and threw it at Riever's head with deft ease. Riever caught it a quarter of an inch from his face and smiled, "She is the combat expert out of us. Don't worry, you'll get your ass kicked by her later. Beside her is Cirelle, she is our great and mighty leader!" Riever bowed his head with a gentle smile, "She is a genius, she has an IQ within the top 1% of the world. She also has brain damage that limits her physical movement. Don't worry though, as an intellectual she is everyone's superior and also, how should I put this... a mother hen. She's the one that cleans, tells us what to do, cooks and does all the paper work for us."

Cirelle was young, she must have been only twenty. She had thin platinum hair, and a sharp long face. Her eyes were a light greyish-blue, and her lips were a soft-pale pink. She looked like she had just been dragged out of a dumpster. She looked at me and I had to cringe. She looked like her mom had known her uncle a little too well. Her hand was up against her chest and it curled into this weird position. I tried not to look at her.

"This my dear," my heart fluttered, he called me 'dear'. Then after I realized what my heart did, I mentally kicked the crap out of myself. After I quickly promised that I would never do it again, I was reminded of, God forbid, Veronica. No offence to her, but she was a perfect, slutty hoe. "This is Tucker, you can guess what we all call him," Riever flashed one of his smiles and I reminded myself that if I did that heart flutter thing again, I would kill myself.

Tucker, what a name...

Tucker, was a young teenage Asian. He looked like he belonged on the cover of every magazine in the world. He had flawless skin, deep black hair that was tipped with red. He was no where near the build of Daemon or Riever, but he was still very muscular.

"Tucker is a shadow-walker, so don't talk about him behind his back," Riever warned with a playful grin.

"What the hell is a shadow-walker?" I asked dumbly. And the winner for best dumb-ass of the year is...

"You can see a shadow-walker in direct light, but other than that, they can disappear from sight whenever they want to. Oh yeah, and they are aliens and they have really funky eyes that when you look straight into them, they can read your mind, but only when they're eyes go all cat-like on you," Riever turned to Tucker, "So don't go pulling any stunts on her or I will find out and kick your ass. You can go ahead and read my mind to see if I'm serious or not," Riever snarled under his breath, but I could hear it. It was like Riever had turned into an entirely different person for two seconds.

"Back off Riever," Kara ordered him. Damn, dominatrix wannabe or what?

"Strange, you never said that to him," Riever snapped back. Back to evil-Riever. A moment ago I wanted to be at home, but looks like this was as close to home as I could get.

"Maybe I'm just a little better to her than you were," Tucker tilted his head, "Or maybe it was problems in the sack."

Riever didn't anymore provocation. He lunged at Tucker, and knocked him off the chair. They were rolling on the ground when Daemon leaped from his seat and separated the two. He grabbed Riever and threw him up against the wall, knocking a picture off. It fell to the ground and smashed into a thousand pieces, but Daemon didn't seem to notice. He was growling... like an animal. It was a deep throaty growl, that I never knew humans could make. Daemon gave Riever a good right hook and then let him fall to the ground and into the pile of glass. Daemon then stormed over to the other side of the room, and then knelt down.

The fight was really exciting, I was loving every minute. Even when Riever got hit. Daemon was really kicking ass. I was now standing trying to see what was happening. Daemon reached into thin air and then pulled Tucker from the shadows. It looked so cool. You could see nothing of Tucker before. I had no idea how Daemon could tell where he was. Daemon threw Tucker down to the ground and got on top of him, taking his shirt in his hand. He pulled Tucker up slightly before slamming back into the ground. A small puddle of blood formed on the tiles and then before Daemon could do anymore, I heard Cirelle speak for the first time.

"Daemon," she stuttered out. She sounded like a sick cat horking up a hairball. Daemon was still for a moment.

"Get off of him," Kara ordered.

"Shut up Kitty," I murmured.

"Why don't you shut up whore?"

"You shut up slut," I countered.

"Look whose talking, I wasn't the one getting all close with a vampire two seconds after meeting him."

"I'm not the one that cheated on my boyfriend," Now, I am really dumb at stuff like math and all that, but I am usually observant, and I had pieced enough of the argument together to know what was going on.

"Low blow," I could hear Tucker cough in the background, but I stood my ground. Did I ever tell you that I am very persistent and obnoxious? It's a gift.

"Bitch."

"Asshole."

"Dick muncher."

"Pussy licker," oh yeah, point for me.

"Lowlife." What kind of insult was that? I shook my head in disappointment.

"Scum sucker." I know I know, not the best insult ever, but she was the one that said 'lowlife'.

"Dip shit."

"Dumb ass," I was running out fast here. Then I saw that woman again. The one in that stupid cloak. She was staring at me. Then all I could hear was her.

"What the hell are you doing?" she asked me, but I tried not to pay attention to her. I refused to talk to a hallucination, "You can't ignore me forever."

"Cunt," I quickly replied before I lost beat.

"You don't think I'm real do you?" she asked me and leaned over Kara, I couldn't see her anymore and I couldn't tell what she said, "I need to talk to you. Get up, and get out of here for awhile."

"Cross-dressing skank," I snarled with anger.

"Do you want proof that I'm real? Is that it? Because I damn well know that you can see me," she spoke to me. She was annoyed, but calm. It pissed me off more than anything else.

Kara had said something else and I had missed it. Crap, what the hell did she say? "Hoe." Hopefully she hadn't said that to me.

"Kara is pregnant you know," the woman finally moved away from Kara, but I still couldn't hear Kara. I could see Kara, but I couldn't hear anything but that damn woman.

Kara smiled, I knew she had something really good that I would be very offensive if I had heard it. I stood up calmly and bent over.

"At least I'm not pregnant," I whispered and then started walking out of the room. Big test of faith here. Was my hallucination right? There was a pause, but I kept walking towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Riever asked. During our fight, Riever had pulled himself up from the ground and was starring at me. I turned to find Kara in absolute shock, and Riever's intense stare.

Crap, what was I supposed to say?

"Home," I answered quietly.

"Ferra," Riever called me, and I paused, like the little obedient puppy that I am, "You're a vampire now, and you know about us, and you have seen things that you can't explain, and you have felt things that you don't understand, and you are changing both mentally and physically, and even though you survived last night you are going to have worse nights, and you..."

I was not hearing this. This was not happening. I froze in panic. They weren't going to let me leave, were they?. I knew what he was going to say. He was going to say that I couldn't go home. I had to stay here like a caged dog.

"...you can't go home." There was more, but I never heard. I was stunned and for a moment and I was overcome with shock. How could they expect this from me?

It took only a moment of hesitation for me to devise my plan. I bolted. I ran like the wind and I ran into the big round room. Okay. O exit... where art thou?

I chose a door at random and ran towards it, when my friendly neighborhood hallucination popped up at the door beside that one. I ran towards her. What was I supposed to do? She had been right about the pregnancy.

I yanked open the door and saw a flight of stairs. Good enough for me. I was jumping two or three steps at a time. I barely felt my feet hit the ground, I was flying up the stairs faster than I had ever felt myself. It seemed so easy, and it was hard for me to find a limit. I told my body to go faster, and it did. I heard shouts at the bottom of the stairway, but I keep running up the spiraling stairs. They were hard grey metal stairs and they echoed throughout the place.

I could hear a second and third person running quickly up the stairs, but they were not as fast as me. I was becoming quickly out of breath though, but I kept running till I must have been three stories up. I saw a door and tried to open it. It was locked, and I could hear the two other people coming fast so I kicked the door open. Just like in the movies. I felt so proud.

I was in the middle of a dark, wet parking lot, and I recognized nothing. But I ran anyway. I ran till I got to the fence at the side and I jumped the whole thing in one big leap. Just like in the movies.

This was fun. Besides the whole being chased by the DSCF lunatics that were trying to keep me from going home.

My heart was pounding in my chest and ears, and I could barely breathe but I told my body to go faster and it did. Then I realized how cold it was. Pyjamas were not the best insulators of heat, and even though the nighttime was warmer in the summer, apparently it had rained while I was sleeping because everything was damp and wet.

My slippers pounded in the puddles and I felt the water soak up my pants. Or should I say pj's. I could hear someone behind me. I turned to see who it was. It was that bitch Kara.

I impulsively turned sharply to cross the street when halfway there I saw that Daemon was on the other side of the street. I kept running down the middle of the street when a car turned the corner and started heading straight for me.

So this is why my mom told me not to play in the middle of the road.

The car hit me head on. I expected pain, but there was none. I was completely numb. For a moment I thought that I was dead, or at least paralyzed, but as I rolled over the windshield and onto the hood, I pushed myself enough that I would roll all the way off the back of the car, and I even had enough time to position my landing so that I landed on my feet and kept on running. No pain whatsoever. I was loving every minute. I could only imagine what the face of the driver was.

I ran along the street and then turned onto the street that the car had turned off of. I saw the a big movie theater down the street. I knew where I was now. It looked so different in the darkness, but I knew where I was, and more importantly, the way home.

Shit.

My lungs were burning and I could still hear Kara behind me, but I couldn't force myself to look. I needed to catch my breath, every moment was suffocating me.

I finally turned down an alley and went to the very end. I slammed down behind a dumpster and leaned up against the damp brick wall. I could see smoke coming from the sides of the building, which was really the moisture of the air condensing because of the cool air conditioners.

Damn, when the hell did I learn that?

I felt like I was getting little pieces of information like that, every time I looked at something. It wasn't as pronounced like having an apparition telling you that someone was pregnant, but little things, like I knew that Daemon was a five hundred year old vampire.

I heard someone running and then stop in front of the alley. I was scared that because I was panting so hard, she would hear me immediately. It was Kara, I knew because... I knew. She stopped right in front of the dumpster and I held my breath.

After what seemed like forever, she turned and left the alley. After a minute I got up and carefully looked down the alley. She was long gone, I could see it and feel it at the same time. This vampire thing was starting to really creep me out.

I took a deep breath and prepare for another marathon of running. I took off and kept telling myself to go faster and faster. It took me awhile to finally get to my house more than ten blocks away, but I got there okay.

It looked so safe and cosy. All the little townhouses all in their little rows. The toys left all over the lawns and the warm lights radiating from the windows. Everything was so peaceful. Why did this have to happen to me?

I didn't know what I would say to my family, but I knew that they would be there. They loved me no matter how little they showed it. And I could survive. But what if the DSCF came after me? I didn't want to think ahead anymore and ran up to my front door. All I wanted was for my mom to hold me.

Before, I had hated hugs, and I thought that I had hated my mother too. But I guess you don't realize thing's value until you lose them.

Like your life.

I was about to jump up the steps to my door when Kara jumped out and held a gun to my forehead. She had come from the bushes at the side of the door. I knew that everything had been too easy.

"You don't want to do this," Kara warned me. I felt the tears burning the back of my eyes.

"You don't want to do this," I shot back. My hands clenched at my sides, I was just waiting for the right moment to grab the gun from her hands, but her finger was just a little to close to the trigger, if I tried to grab it, in the struggle to keep hold of it, she might pull the trigger, and bye-bye head. As little as I use it, I think I might actually need my head. One of those pieces of information that I keep picking up.

"You don't understand," Kara spoke harshly to me, I was just starring at her finger, waiting for it to loosen for two seconds...

"There is nothing that is going to stop me from seeing my family," I growled, and then I felt something behind me. Daemon.

I turned and shot toward the big maple tree in our yard before he could jump me. I jumped up and grabbed a hold of one of the branches and swung myself up. Before I had even gotten my balance, I was already jumping to another branch higher up. I felt the tree shake and I knew that Kara was close on my tail. At least she hadn't fired at me yet. Yet.

I was about to leap for a third branch when I felt Kara grab my foot, and I lost my balance. I fell, but quickly grabbed a branch on the way down, and it took only seconds for me to find a strong branch to rest on. Daemon was on the ground with his gun drawn and aimed at me, and Kara was at a branch higher than me with her gun aimed at me too.

No where to go. Damn, I wished I was a shadow-walker.

"Listen, we have an agent in there, and he is telling your parents and brother that you are dead right now. You go in there and you'll send your mother to the looney bin. Comprende?" Kara's Spanish accent was heavy.

"You're doing what?" I couldn't believe it, these people weren't human, no pun intended.

"Right now he is telling your family that you were found beaten and stabbed to death in an alley by a club. You're friend Veronica can testify that she was there with you and you left with a man. Unfortunately, you're body was too mauled and disfigured to be identified, but your finger prints and dental records have been checked and they have determined that it was you. You legally died at yesterday at 7:34 p.m. We can even get a copy of your death certificate if you want. Now, if you go in there, imagine what your parents are going to think!" Kara shouted at me, but I was barely listening.

"Fuck you, you know that? Fuck you! You screwed me over! You took away my family, my freedom and my life. So let me just tell you to fuck off!" I was pissed, and the tears were burning behind my eyes. Kara was silent, and then she looked down at Daemon.

"Daemon, I need a moment alone with Ferra," Kara lowered her gun which had been aimed at me the entire time. Yeah, that's right, I told a pissed off woman with a gun to my head to fuck off. You can tell what kind of classes I was in at school. I never said that I was smart, I said I was a smart-ass.

"Now!" Kara ordered Daemon, and I knew that she was pissing him off. Daemon reluctantly walked away from the tree and waited at the bottom of the driveway.

"Listen, I know you want to go in there right now, but you are in shit! I didn't take your life away, Drake did. Daemon was the one that saved you, and the rest of us are trying to give you something. You can't go back Ferra. You're a vampire now. You can't even go into sunlight. You are lucky that you survived. Be happy for what you have and be thankful that I'm telling you not to go in there."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean? Be thankful that I'm telling you not to go in there? What kind of bull are you trying to feed me?"

"You want to know what will happen? No one was able to catch up to me when I went home. I had just been bitten but they had enough time to assemble a clean-up crew. I walked in on Riever telling my parents that I was too mauled to be identified. My step-mom screamed, my dad had a heart attack. My dad was in the hospital for four weeks recovering, and my step-mom spent a year in a nut house. My dad died twice on the table. I ruined my parents lives. It was one of the most selfish things that I have done in my life. I ended up choosing to go back. There was no way that I could live a normal life," tears streamed down Kara's face.

It was unfair and cruel, but I was beginning to see what she meant. I lowered my head in defeat. "How old were you when you got bit?" I asked. Privacy? Never heard of it.

"Eight," she answered and I felt a twinge of guilt. She was so young when something traumatic happened. No wonder she was so screwed up, "But I never turned. I'm not a vampire. If they get you early enough, and you're young enough, and you get bit by a lower class vampire, that's what we call vampires that were once human," Kara quickly added, "then sometimes, they can save you."

"But let me guess, I'm too old, it was too late, and Drake wasn't a lower-class vampire," I shook my head.

"He was an upper-class vampire. Which means that he was given birth to, and one or both of the parents was a lower-class vampire. You see his father was a master, which is the offspring of two upper-class vampires, and then he took Crystal, a lower-class vampire as his wife, and their son was Drake. So Drake is actually the vampire Prince, because his father was the vampire King. Only masters can be the King, and so Drake wanted an upper-class vampire as his wife so that he could have a son, and then his son would be a master, and then his son could take the throne, and then he could rule through his son. Its all very complicated, but you'll be forced to study the vampire society," Kara glared at Daemon who was starring at them.

"You knew Crystal," I got one of those weird knowledge things. It isn't like a big moment, its just kinda of like you know it. Someone asks you what 1+1 is, you know the answer, someone asks me if Kara knew Crystal, I just know it. It was so natural.

"Yes," Kara clenched her teeth.

"She was your real mother," I felt sympathy for her. She deserved it. The horror that she must have gone through.

"Damn it, how the hell do you know these things? Its fucking me up!" Kara yelled at me, and I lost my balance. I fell out of the tree. I hit the ground with a thud, but I felt nothing. Black spots danced before my eyes, and I felt my body protest to every movement.

"Ferra," Kara was by my side and then I heard the door unlock and someone opening it. What happened if my parents saw me? My parents couldn't see me. Daemon was over me in a second and he was whisking me away into the bushes. I could see my mother standing in the moonlight. Her grief stricken face was too painful to watch.

"Please, come back inside," I could see a man take her arm and try to guide her inside.

"Please, just let me tell my mother that I'm alright, and not dead, please," I looked to Daemon but Daemon only strengthened his grip on my arms.

"I thought I heard her," I heard my mother say, on the brink of tears.

"Mother," I whispered, and Daemon covered my mouth his large hands. They were cold, and my ass was getting wet from the damp soil.

"Cats," I heard the man say.

~End Chapter 4 - Home~

Author's Notes: I know that the Vampire society thing may be a little confusing, but it will be better explained later on. But just in case you can't wait that long... just use this as a reference:

Lower Class -Become a Vampire by being bitten

Upper Class -Born Vampire

Master -Born Vampire with extreme strength and can take the throne

Breeding:

Lower + Lower = Upper

Lower + Upper = Upper

Upper + Upper = Master

Master + Upper= Upper

Master + Master= Master

Master + Lower= Upper

Okay, still confused? Too bad.
