COVERED RUN-ABOUT WAGGON

The details necessary to construct this model were obtained from the full-size original owned by Mr E.I.Williams of the Forest of Dean Collection.  To photograph, measure and record all the decoration and construction details was a day's work.  The original waggon, an open lot type, had been much repaired and altered over the years.  This model has therefore, been 'rebuilt' using a considerable knowledge of gypsy caravans to show the original gypsy style and layout.  For example, the roof is constructed showing three layers of material.  The inner layer, the ceiling is of highly decorative material, the next layer a tough strengthening material and the outside layer the weatherproof tarpaulin. This small waggon was used to attend horse fairs and markets being easier to handle than the larger caravans on such occasions.

The decoration is extensive and colourful, both inside and out, using many colours and scenes.  To the outside, the front curtain is elaborately decorated with pictures of flowers and to its side's pictures of two Black Eye Susie climbers.  The back being decorated with pictures of bullfinches, an apple branch in bloom with bunches of grapes beneath.  The sides have pictures of flowers painted onto brass plates, with various leaves along the framework to complete the decoration.

The Run-About's furnishings are, of course limited, but in keeping with the size of the vehicle.  There being a large bed settee and two easy chairs.  Small cupboards and a chest of draws all highly decorated.
