ASSIGNMENTS JULY 27TH

As we are almost finished with the MORPHLOGY LEVEL, we will be moving into the GRAMMAR LEVEL.

You are to read the following texts that deal with basic aspects of English grammar.

1. “Basic Sentence Patterns” ( chapter 2) Pages 18-25, f rom the book The Grammatical Structures of English and Spanish by Robert P. Stockwell.

This text is at the photocopier, code 432. It contains a list of the basic structures of English. Get yourself a photocopy and perouse them. Take them to your next class because I will refer to it and make comments about it.

2. “The descriptive approach” , pages 73-77. from the book, The Study of Language by George Yule.

Read this chapter and make a one page letter-size summary of the ideas making sure what you understand by descriptive approach, structural analysis, and immediate constituent analysis (ICA).

3. Bring to class a list of the traditional grammatical categories and examples of each category. For example, noun, pronoun, verb, etc. You can search the Internet and type in Google: grammartical categories +english.
