Wang2 Fei1 (Wang Jing Wen) is my favourite Canto-Mandarin pop singer. I wasn't very much into listening either Western or Chinese songs before 1995 but I was first captivated by her song Qi2 Zi3 (Chess Piece) in late 1995. Her clear, lilting and sweet voice captivated me and the lyrics too, were extremely meaningful. Therefore, I went out and bought her Tian1 Kong1 (Sky) album, which contained the song Qi2 Zi3 and many other songs. In fact, I still consider that album my favourite one among all her Mandarin albums I have.

Her sweet and captivating voice was once again displayed in the other songs in the Tian1 Kong1 album and I found myself an idol, the first one in my teen years. Over the next 2 years, I gradually built up my collection of her albums and up til now, I have all her Mandarin albums and almost all her Cantonese ones, even though I don't speak or understand Cantonese. I found that her Cantonese singing was even better than the Mandarin ones as the Cantonese words intonations were more musical. My favourite Cantonese song is the one from her newest album (only love strangers), entitled Postman.

Faye Wong was the reigning Cantopop-queen for some years now and even though she retired from the music scene temporarily to give birth to her baby daughter, I still supported her. Meanwhile, competition was heating up as there were many singers now vying for that coveted Queen position, notably Sammi Cheng. However, I still believe no one singer can ever sing the unique and carefree way that Faye sings and the unique natural surroundings of her MTVs.

In late 1997, she switched from Polygram to EMI and release her first Mandarin album, Ni3 Kuai4 Le4 (Suo2 Yi3 Wo3 Kuai4 Le4) (You happy, so I'm happy) under the EMI label. This album displayed a new singing style of Faye for her first 4 songs - a decidedly "heck-care" attitude, but her fifth song, Ren2 Jian1, once again displayed her previous charming and wonderful style of singing - my favourite. Nevertheless, after a few weeks of listening to that album, I have grown to like all the songs - this is actually the first album that I have thoroughly enjoyed all the songs in it.

I'm was waiting for Faye to make a trip to Singapore to hold another concert; I missed the 1994 concert, but I'm certain I'll not miss the next one. So, Faye, please come to Singapore! For all those who haven't been introduced to Faye's highly musical voice yet, go grab a copy of her Fei1 Mi2 Mi2 Zi1 Yin1 album (which contains her rendition of the late Teresa Teng's classics) or the Tian1 Kong1 album. They are a good starting point for you to start appreciating the songs of the Queen of Canto-pop. -
