MIDI
MIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface) is an interface between musical instruments and the computer. MIDI-capable instruments are able to be played and the corresponding notes and values displayed on the computer screen (simply speaking). The notes can then be created or edited using an appropriate MIDI sequencing software. The instruments can be changed, giving rise to mixes, and special effects can also be added to enhance the sound.
Usually, most lower-end sound cards (such as the Sound Blaster 16 and older) utilise something called a FM-synthesizer to generate the MIDI sounds. The FM-synthesizer does not do justice to the sequencer as the sounds are extremely crude and digital-like. You will an a high-end sound card with WAVETABLE SYNTHESIS (such as the Sound Blaster AWE series) to fully enjoy the MIDIs. However, you can also get high-quality MIDI output if you have a software synthesizer such as the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas or the Yamaha S-YG20. If you have a powerful processor (Pentium 133 and above), you can try out these software synthesizers and hear the difference for yourself.
Addenum:
With current soundcards available on the market nowadays such as the SoundBlaster Live! (Oooh..times have changed since I first created this page when SB16 was still the de-facto/norm soundcard on the market), you can now set environmental sound settings via the EAX (Environmental Audio Extensions) functions of the Live! soundcard, which allows MIDI output to be, well, even more real than real! Likewise, the other camp uses the Aureal A3D or Sensaura technologies to project 3D sound, so whatever new soundcard you're using now, MIDI will sound terrific!
