Gudeg Once
More
Yogya is known under several
alias names: the city of learning, city of revolution, city of art,
and city of gudeg. Gudeg is the regional breakfast
speciality (although it is not strange to find it with lunch or
dinner). It's sweet (like most of food in Yogya), contains rice, and
is mostly cooked jackfruit. The best gudeg is cooked at home and is
sometimes sold on Malioboro late at night or in the early morning.
One of the advantages of gudeg is that it takes several days to get
stale. The best gudeg is usually served in a clay "kendhil"
(cooking-pot).
There are many places you can visit to taste
gudeg in Yogya. Gudeg Bu Citro at Solo Street 17th kilometers
consider to be one of the best. Gudeg at Wijilan (east of the
Sultan's Palace), that of the Tugu Monument crossroad (southside of
Malioboro), and one near the Permata Theatre are good
alternatives.
By the way, it really is an
unforgettable experience to eat gudeg at the Tugu at night (11pm -
12pm). Under the light of glowing, hissing gas lamps, neon lights of
the closed shops, and accompanied by the grandeur of the Tugu
monument.
Under the same
moon... Sate sapi
Karang (skewered cow meat -- not unlike shiskabab -- at Karang,
Kotagede, 5 kilometers east from the city central) is quite
different from others. Open daily at 6.30pm - 11.00pm and served
under the moon, it lends a peaceful atmosphere, making it the right
place for business negotiations, relaxation, or even brainstorming.
It is only 20 minutes ride from the center of town.
Home sweet
home... McDonalds,
Kentucky Fried Chicken, Texas Fried Chicken, California Fried
Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Dunkin' Donuts are easily found in Yogya.
Although we recommend you to explore the delicious Jogjanese food,
those kind of western food are still available as alternatives.
Pizza Hut is located at the Sudirman Street (near the Tugu monument)
while others can be found along Malioboro.
