The trail starts on the left at Summer street where there is parking available. To reach the Mill Street parking lot, take Summer Street to end, left on W. Summer Street and an immediate right down Water Street to end. Turn right down Mill Street where a parking lot is located next to the trail.

This section of trail is part of the Farmington Canal Rail Trail that will eventually run from New Haven to  Massachusetts. See Farmington Canal Rail Trail Letterbox in Hamden. This is also part of the East-Coast Greenway. See;  EAST COAST GREENWAY  or  FARMINGTON CANAL RAIL TRAIL  .

Starting from the trailhead at West Main Street, head north along the trail. After 0.6 miles you'll come to a bridge that crosses over the Quinnipiac River. There is an old railroad siding here, as well as benches. You cross Center Street after a mile, where the town has brick lined sidewalks, benches and lampposts. Just over 1 1/4 miles brings you to the Mill Street parking lot. At 1 1/2 miles you'll come to a red, cinder wall on your right. Just before this wall is a sign that reads buried fiber optic cable. From that sign, head back south 20 paces (1 pace = 2 steps). You should pass a large, three-trunked tree at pace #13. This will bring you to a smaller multi-trunked tree, just before a row of 4 small Pine trees. (Note; they were not looking too well, so they may eventually be dug up). Facing east towards the tree line, a faint path runs between the first Pine tree and the multi-trunked tree. This will lead you 4 paces to an old concrete pipe. Simply remove the top piece of an old railroad tie to gain access inside the pipe. Remove the top brick and an old piece of asphalt to reach the Farmington Canal Rail Trail North Letterbox. Please be discreet, as this is a busy trail. Please replace the rock back on top of the box as well as the brick. The trail continues on another 1/2 mile before it ends at Cutriss Street.
