HUTCHINSON RIVER GREENWAY:

BRONX, NEW YORK

-BIKE IT OR HIKE IT-

Last Updated:        May 30, 2009

Length:                  Completed section; 3 miles

Difficulty:              Easy. Paved trail.

Directions:

You may access the trail via the NYC Subway's Middletown Road Station. For more information visit; NYC SUBWAY . For information concerning taking your bike on the Subway visit; NYC SUBWAY; BIKES .

The Hutchinson River Greenway follows the Hutchinson River Parkway and part of the Hutchinson River from Ferry Point Park near the Whitestone Bridge north. It utilizes part of the Mosholu-Pelham Greenway before continuing north through Pelham Bay Park to the Westchester County line. For more information visit;  HUTCHINSON RIVER GREENWAY and MOSHOLU-PELHAM GREENWAY .

Starting from the northern junction with the Mosholu-Pelham Greenway; The northern section of the greenway has not been completed. Heading south from the Mosholu-Pelham Greenway the paved trail travels along the western side of the Hutchinson River Pkwy. After a mile you'll come to Waters Pl. Turn left and travel up to Westchester Ave.

Note; Left up Westchester Ave will bring you to the NYC Subway's Middletown Road Station. No elevator access so you'll have to carry your bike up or down the stairs.

Cross over Westchester Ave and turn left. Cross over the Pkwy and turn right to continue south along the east side of the Pkwy. I didn't bike this section. The trail continues to a big interchange (Cross Bronx Expressway/Bruckner Expressway/Hutchinson River Pkwy) where it heads right (west) underneath the Hutchinson River Pkwy, then underneath the others to Brush Ave. Here you'll begin an on-road section following Brush Ave south. When you reach Schley Ave look for the paved trail to begin again as you enter Ferry Point Park. The trail winds through the park, with the Pkwy now on left. There appears to be many intersecting trails, with some taking you alongside the river as it empties into Westchester Creek, a tidal inlet of the East River..
