SPRINGFIELD RESERVOIR LETTERBOX:

Difficulty: Easy. Paved, flat trail.
Directions:
Take exit 7 off of I-90 (Mass Pike) to Route 21 north and continue for about 3 miles. As you go around a sharp curve, look for the parking lot on your left. There will be a small sign.
The Springfield Reservoir, which is also referred to as the Ludlow Reservoir, is open to the public from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm April 1st - October 31st. I'm not sure about the rest of the year.
There is a signboard located at the trailhead, which starts past the gate. The trail is paved and starts out under a thick Pine tree canopy. After crossing over a stone culvert, with a stream heading down the hill, you'll come alongside the reservoir. There is a Porto-potty at 1/2 mile and mile markers every half mile after that. Next, you'll pass by a fishing pier and then come to the 1 mile marker on your right. From this mile post continue 6 paces (2 steps = 1 pace) along the trail. There will be a Pine tree next to the trail on your right and a hardwood tree off the left side of the trail. Go to the hardwood tree and just behind it will be a second tree with its roots growing over a large rock. Go to the backside of this rock, remove a smaller rock and reach under the ledge to retrieve the SPRINGFIELD RESERVOIR LETTERBOX. There is a small rock on top of the box to protect it. Please replace as found. Note; there are car patrols along the trail by reservoir personnel, so please be discreet. Just after passing the 2 mile mark, the trail heads around the head of the reservoir and starts back along the eastern side. The trail then pulls away from the reservoir and into the woods. At 3 1/4 miles the trail ends at a gate, before the dam. There is a signboard and benches located here.
