Slater Memorial Park to Letterbox; 2 miles
Kimberly Rock Park to Letterbox; ¼ mile
Slater Memorial Park to Ten Mile State Park; 0.8 miles
Difficulty: Easy. Paved trail along a gently rolling, winding trail.
Directions:
To start from Slater Park; From I-95, just across the state line in Massachusetts, take exit 2A to Route 1A south. Travel less than 2 miles down Route 1A and take a left at the light for Armistice Blvd (Route 15). Travel east until you come to the entrance for Slater Park on your right. If you keep going straight, you'll end up in Massachusetts.
To start from Kimberly Rock Park; From I-95 in Pawtucket, take exit 28 to Route 114 south. Turn left (north) up Route 1A. Just a ways up turn right onto Ferris Ave. This will take you to Kimberly Rock Park where the trail starts next to the ball field parking lot.
Slater Memorial Park is a very interesting area. Some of its attractions include an 1894 Loof Carousel, the historic Daggett House which was built in 1685 and a pond built in 1937 by the WPA (In 1935, the Works Progress Administration was created to help provide economic relief to the citizens of the United States who were suffering through the Great Depression.) that has two cement bridges built to look like tree trunks with branch railings leading to a small gazebo. For more information visit; SLATER MEMORIAL PARK , BIKE RI or RI GREENWAYS ALLIANCE . A second Letterbox is located along another nearby bike trail. See; East Bay Bike Path Letterbox.
Starting from Slater Park; There
are numerous parking areas in the park and the trail pass alongside a section of
the park, but the trail begins just past the park entrance on the right down
from the Pawtucket Veterans Monument "shell".
Note;
The undeveloped trail to Ten Mile State Park starts across Armistice
Blvd. heading north. Future plans call for paving this trail as well. See
below.
The trail winds through the woods generally following the path of the Ten Mile River which is on your left. At 0.4 miles, you come along the picnic area and then to an informational sign post at 0.6 miles. Notice that the river has stone banks that were used to create a channel along the river. You pass through a tunnel at 0.9 miles, with the Providence & Worchester Railroad tracks above. You'll come to a stone retaining wall on your right, next to the railroad tracks at 1 ¼ miles and a view of Central Pond on your left. The river flows into this pond, which has the largest concentration of swans that I have ever seen. The trail crosses a small bridge at 1.7 miles, with a marsh on the right. At about 2 miles, just after passing by two white signs that say "walk on left" on each side of the trail, you will come to a small clearing along both sides of the trail. Small trees have been planted in the clearings. Just as you approach the left side clearing, notice a group of Pine trees and an Oak tree with an S painted on it. Take 10 paces (2 steps = 1 pace) from the trail along the left side of the clearing and turn left facing the tree line. Next, walk 6 paces through another small clearing to a downed tree. Go to the base of the tree, on the backside and under its roots will be some rocks. Lift up the top rock to reveal the Ten Mile River Greenway Letterbox. Continuing along the trail another ¼ mile will bring you to Kimberly Rock Park and the end of the trail.
To travel up to Ten Mile Park along the undeveloped trail, cross over Armistice Blvd from the trailhead to the sidewalk and head left. You'll see a dirt trail heading into the woods on your right. Go down this trail keeping to the left, where it changes from sandy to hard packed dirt. The trail is rough in spots with tree roots and some sandy sections, but is easily navigated on a mountain bike. You start off traveling next to a pond, but soon turn into the woods. At 0.7 miles you'll pass alongside the Notre Dame Cemetery and then come to a fork in the trail. Left brings you to the parking lot for Ten Mile State Park at 0.8 miles, while right simply brings you up a knoll overlooking the parks ball fields.
