Shrek, A Fairy Tale Travesty By: Steven Schiroo On nearly every list of “good” movies you are guaranteed to find one title, Shrek, in the top five or ten. But, if you ask me it is undeserving of most of the attention it gets. While most of the music was amazing even after watching the movie five or six times, the humor and story were miss-matched and the characters were simply disturbing. When you get down to it this movie is worth seeing… once. If you truly want to view this movie for a second time, bring a blindfold. Most of the sons (Excluding of course “All-star” by Smashmouth) are amazing. The music matches the feel of the story, being very real and sad when glimpses of the heartbroken party play and very giddy, or “cartoony” when all is put right at the end. Eddie Murphy is a hilarious man, but everyone knows he’s not very clean. As Donkey he cracks jokes about everything that should never appear on screen. He appears very much as the antagonist bully. Though the moral of the story is that things may not be what they seem from the outside, Donkey constantly mocks the hero, Shrek, for being different. This story was written as a children’s fairy tale so where did all the trash come from? Even at it’s best the story has the feel of a “B” movie and if it weren’t for the beautiful artwork the movie wouldn’t be worth a dime. With all that said I beg you not to buy this movie, and it will only serve to encourage more movies like it. If you want to watch it even yet then you may want to rent it or borrow it from a friend but as I said before, this movie is only worth seeing once.
