Abstract
Eventhough many macro attempts have been undertaken by the Indonesian government to upgrade the quality of education, the quality of education still depends on the micro improvement, learning process in the classroom. Studies into the classroom climate has produced evidence that the field contributes a large proportion of professionalism in enhancing learning process in many developed countries. Such studies have been introduced in Indonesia, however the number and quality need to be enhanced.
The aim of this study is to develop and validate an instrument of classroom climate based on the instrument developed in Australia. The instrument consists of two forms, the actual and prferred forms, which can be used to measure aspects of the actual and preferred classroom climate.
The study involved 1126 grade V and VI elementary school students in Padang, West Sumatera. Data were analysed by applying factor analysis, Cronbach Alphaa and discriminant validity formulas.
The results of the study demonstrate that 1) the empirical evidance supported the items grouped into scales; 2) the internal consistency of the instrument was better than that developed in 1994; 3) each item of the instrument was not overlap with the others. So, the instrument can be used to measure classroom climate; however, it suggests to validate for junior high school students.
