100 Schools of Thought!

PROCESS

Review what you have previously studied about ancient Chinese geography, economy, and history.

1. First, make sure each council member has a copy of this handout: REVIEW HANDOUT

Then go to the web sites as directed and use the handout to guide you in note-taking and discussions with your council members. You may work individually or in pairs to complete the handout (each member must have a completed handout); however, you must work as a whole council group and discuss your responses.

2. Set your frame-of-mind with a brief historical overview of the time period at

      http://asterius.com/china/china1.html#EZhou

                          http://www-chaos.umd.edu/history/ancient1.html#zhou

3. Review geography at http://www.ancientchina.co.uk/menu.html  by navigating to the Time link.  Read through the information and answer the middle two questions at this link. Then locate the ancient maps section. First look at the terrain map; then zoom in to read about different geographical features (e.g. desert, river).  Next, locate the capital of Western Zhou and then progress through to locate the capital of the Eastern Zhou.  Finally, look at the map of the Warring States.

4. Review the Warring States period at

                          http://www2.sjsu.edu/faculty/watkins/warringstates.htm

                          http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/chin1/g/WarringStates.htm

5.  Review 100 Schools of Thought at http://www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/history/ (click on Zhou and Eastern Zhou, scroll down to 100 Schools of Thought)

Then review:

                http://catalog.socialstudies.com/c/@W2tVf9OrePFwM/Pages/article.html?article@NH105A

6.  Now, each member of your council must research/review one of the 100 Schools of Thought that the emperor is considering.  First review your previous class notes on these philosophies.  Then go to the appropriate web site to continue to review these philosophies and answer the questions on your review handout.

MOHISM: Review your notes (chapter 9-3 in Houghton Mifflin text) about Mohism then go to

http://library.thinkquest.org/19053/comparison/mohism.htm

           http://www.friesian.com/six.htm#china

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mohism/

           http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/china/mohism.html

http://www.answers.com/topic/mo-zi

DAOISM: After reviewing your class notes on Daoism go to

                http://www.urantiabook.org/archive/readers/601_taoism.htm

               (read about the 4 themes especially 3 & 4)

           http://www.religioustolerance.org/taoism.htm

(scroll down to last bullet points)   Then scroll to about paragraph 14 and read through about 21 (classical Taoism)

CONFUCIANISM: After reviewing your class notes on Confucianism go to

http://www.friesian.com/confuci.htm  (section after table and before moralism)

http://www.friesian.com/six.htm#china (paragraph about Confucianism up to Tang dynasty)

http://www.urantiabook.org/archive/readers/601_confucianism.htm (paragraph 7 & 8 about Li)

LEGALISM: After reviewing your class notes on Legalism go to

                http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~wldciv/world_civ_reader/world_civ_reader_1/hanfeitzu.html

           http://www.wsu.edu:8001/~dee/CHPHIL/LEGALISM.HTM

           http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/china/legal.html

7. In considering your decision about the best philosophy to recommend you may need to review some of the great accomplishments of ancient China by visiting these web sites:

           http://www.crystalinks.com/chinainventions.html

          http://www.askasia.org/teachers/lessons/plan.php?no=64&era=&grade=&geo=

                   (scroll to summary of inventions)

8.    Your council should check in with the emperor’s most revered advisor to make sure you have enough background knowledge to complete the rest of this task.

9. Using the completed handout, any class notes, or information from any other resource on Chinese philosophies, each member should fill out a pro/con list for the philosophy that member was researching. Use the graphic organizer provided here:

       PHILOSOPHY PRO/CON T-CHART

10.   Get back together in your council and discuss the pro and cons of each philosophy.  Have a scribe jot down  some of your discussion points using this handout:

               DISCUSSION PROS&CONS

After you have thoroughly discussed the pro/cons of each of the philosophies, choose the one your council will recommend to the emperor’s advisor.

11.   Now, review elements of persuasive writing/speech here:

PERSUASIVE REVIEW

12. For the philosophy your council has chosen to recommend, take the Pro/Con T-Chart previously made    and, as a group, number your arguments from weakest to strongest. Be sure to identify at least one    counter-argument. Then, using the Persuasive Essay T-chart provided, sketch-out your essay.

RECOMMENDATION ESSAY T-CHART

13. Now, write a recommendation to the emperor using your best persuasive writing strategies.  Each     council member will be responsible for one of the following sections:

               Introduction and conclusion

               Argument #1

               Argument #2

               Argument #3

Together, you will decide placement of your counter-argument within the essay. Don’t forget the basic elements of writing that we’ve practiced all year

14. Respond, edit, and proofread your document (the emperor’s most revered advisor knows that the emperor has high standards)!

                   RESPONSE AND PROOFREAD/EDIT SHEETS

15. Finally, present your recommendation to the emperor’s most revered advisor (your teacher) no later than the date specified.
