At the risk of severely embarrassing myself, here is my ungainly swing from the Tarzan rope into the watering hole at El Eden, where we spent most of Tuesday getting our exercise and adrenaline rush. It began with a 45-minute truck ride up dirt roads into the jungle above the Mismaloya River, to the set where “Predator” was filmed – the crashed helicopter and Governator’s hideout are about all that’s left of it. We were all given body harnesses, pulleys, helmets, and instructions on how not to lose our fingers, hands, eyes, and other body parts before doing a “test run”, gliding along a wire cable above the river, suspended by a clip on our waists. Then the serious hiking began, up steps and pathways to the top, where we zipped from huts on one side of the canyon to the other, trying desperately to go fast enough to get to the other side but slowly enough not make a crash landing, and to see something along the way. (They volunteered to rescue any ladies who got stuck in the middle, but the men were on their own – who said chivalry was dead?) Every moment of our panic was captured on film and made available to us on DVD, which we are thinking of auctioning off to the highest bidder. We had planned to make the choice moments available to the world on youtube.com, but we can’t figure out a way to edit the video without special software, and the thing goes on for 40 minutes (there were 9 people in our group, so you see every zip for each person, plus the view below, filmed by our expert cameraman). So you’ll have to be satisfied with how we ended the excursion: a plunge into the waterfall we flew over (my arms still hurt from this!) and fresh red snapper grilled in garlic sauce!
