Here’s a small part of the buffet from my very favorite restaurant – obviously not a fancy place, but Planet Vegetariano is rated one of the best vegetarian restaurants IN THE WORLD by Bon Appetit magazine. For around $6.50, you can eat all you want from their lovely selection of colorful, healthy entrees, soups, salads and fresh juices. What’s more, it’s almost all gluten-free and dairy-free, which means I can eat everything – a most unusual treat for me. It served as the inspiration for the meal I made at home last night: Poblano chilies stuffed with wasabi-garlic mashed potatoes and topped with a mushroom-tomato sauce. (It was a lot easier than it sounds, and well worth the effort!) We’re also trying some of the local fruits and vegetables: tomatillos were a smash hit in salsa; guanabana (also known as soursop or custard apple) was less successful, insofar as I didn’t know you were supposed to cook it! Fortunately, I did know you aren’t supposed to eat the seeds or skin, which I later discovered contain “a high concentration of irritant poison”. Who volunteers to come to dinner for the next experiment? ;-)
