Looks so peaceful, doesn’t it? This is the night view from our balcony – minus the fireworks, which are displayed every night for exactly 3 seconds short of how long it takes me to find and turn on and click the shutter on my camera. You’d never guess that last night we had a near hurricane. All of a sudden, the wind is howling, things are flying off rooftops, doors are slamming throughout the house and I’m afraid we’re going to be sucked up like Dorothy and Toto. We have (now that we’ve counted) 7 doors and 13 windows in our apartment, all of which (except the front door) are open at all times, and all of which I thought needed to be closed (and everything breakable or fly-offable be taken in) before I had a nervous breakdown or the house disintegrated, whichever came first. We did manage to get them all closed before the electricity on one side of the condo, including the phone, TV and internet, went out for the night, but the terrible rattling of doors, banging of shutters and whistling of wind did not abate for hours. The next morning all was peaceful, there was not a cloud in the sky, and all the circuits were back in operation. Just like nothing ever happened.
