Following or Not Following Fashion de Klara Losonczy

Fashion has been a highly regarded problem world wide since ever. I believe it is in human kind’s character to imitate and praise beauty, as the famous artistic concepts "mimesis" and "catharsis" also state. Although, I do not agree that following fashion is to be one’s major purpose in life.

Firstly, dressing the same way means monotony and generalization. And it has always been believed that what makes man’s strength and superiority is its own individuality. One should only imagine a crowded room where ten persons are wearing the same patterned blouse. In conclusion, following fashion means –from this point of view-loosing one’s exterior individuality.

Secondly, as many people nowadays are more and more preoccupied with "sticking" to the fashion and as this changes now from season to season, and from couturier to couturier, I truly think that being in fashion has become an exorbitant luxury. And from a certain point, people become obsessed with wearing the latest models and spend all their income for expensive dresses or jewels, instead of meditating upon more essential aspects like health or education.

On the other hand, it is generally known that fashion has been since ancient times one of the primary elements that defined a culture and that best pictured one era’s specific atmosphere and ideals. For instance, if one has in view the ‘20ties, it firstly thinks about the narrow, cheerfully coloured, up-to-knees dresses and about French styled, short hair-dressing.

To sum up, fashion is an important cultural aspect of the human society, but in my opinion, not one of the most important. Even though many people believe it to be a major aspect of modern life, I firmly feel that there are more vital, profound and unfortunately neglected domains to considerate.
