Haiku
is very short traditional Japanese poetry. using three lines and seventeen syllables.
In haiku the poet tries to look deeply into everything. She/he tries to find
the meaning behind any small event. For example a candle behind a window might
have no meaning for most people, but it can be a sign from a beloved to her
lover, who is waiting for her,
and so poet can write:
xxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxx xxBehind no window
xxxxxxx the shake of candles flame
xxxxxxx love moved to somewhere else!
If we know this simple contract between the lovers, we can easily see the poet's
purpose.
A leaf that is moving in the wind, a boat that tired fishermen pulling to the
shore, a high mountain, the snow, the dark night which becoms day,... can be
a subject of haiku. The perpuse of haiku isn't beauty, just to simply show us
what we always know, without knowing that we know! the haiku teaches us to pay
attention to every thing,... life and leaving means understanding the inexplanable
meaning of the small things. It tells us this truth that while we are alive
we are poets.
