The Kendai Relay Station. Built on the edges of civilization, it's main purpose is the reestablishment of contact with frontier worlds, known simply as the Verge.

November 2, 2495
Alex lay back on his bunk, sliding into the webbing that kept his body attached to the bedding. It had been a tiring day, ferrying messages back and forth between the incoming ships. Bah! Reduced to being a mailboy for the Verge! How insulting! Only a few weeks ago Alex had been running escort duty, piloting real ships through the darkness of space with the help of his Artifial Intelligence, Cal. She was a real sweetie, acting as his eyes and ears for the past seventeen years of his life. Blind since birth, he appreciated all the help he could get and Cal filled that role nicely. Holding all of these indignities to his chest, he drifted off into a troubled sleep.

There was a russle from the door as Alex awoke. He was still tired and a bit sleepy but it was nothing that a caffeine pill couldn't fix. The russle came from the one of the security men who had come sneaking into the barracks. There was a brief commotion as he playfully ambushed another security woman. Alex tuned them out.

He lay in bed, thoughts of flight and fantasy spinning through his head. He still had a few minutes before he actually had to get out of bed and he wanted to savor the time alone. All of his troubles had mounted, finally culminating in this disgustingly insulting job...

Without warning, a large boom rocked the station. The security doors snapped shut, effectively sealing the set of them in the room. What the... Confusion snapped through his mind for a moment before he brought himself under control. The soft, comforting voice of Cal spoke to him from the memory harness hanging above his head. He strapped her over his shoulder as she continued to murmur. "... all lights are out. Gravity lost. To your left..." He shook his head.

His troubles had only begun...
