Movies with Gay Characters

Happy Together
Country: Hong Kong
Director: Wong Kar Wai
Leading Males: Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung

Leslie and Tony traveled from Hong Kong to Argentina, in search for a new beginning. New beginning for Tony means that Leslie dumped him and came back to him, so starting a new life in an unknown place like Argentina probably means re-igniting their relationship. However, things didn't go as smooth as they'd like, after the sexy love scene in the first few seconds of the movie, the couple started quarrelling for no obvious reasons, and Leslie decided to leave Tony once again.

Life without Leslie was unbearably lonely for Tony, while the wild Leslie continued his journey with numerous new boy friends from Argentina. What happens afterwards was both sweet and sad. My favourite part is when Leslie's hands got smashed by his new boyfriends, came back to Tony for help and Tony took care of him in every possible way. They are again like a perfect couple at first, but in no time, their relationship is on the verge of breaking apart again.

If you have developed a dislike for Leslie in the first half of the movie, because he seems selfish and mindless, you'll probably change your mind in the second half, for Leslie becomes more and more desperate as the story go, and in the end, he actually ends up alone and stuck in Argentina, while Tony moves on with his life. So sad for Leslie ...

Leslie Cheung in Real Life
In real life, Leslie is quite a character himself. He has been a popular singer/actor in Hong Kong and has also been popular in various Asian countries for at least a decade. (When this movie was made, he was over 40 years of age already, doesn't look like it, right!?) He is, I would say, half-openly gay. It seems that the media would every once in a while write about Leslie and his partner, never mentioning words like gay/homosexual/queer, etc, while stating that his partner is a he. This kind of ambiguity leads the the fact that some of his fans are 100% sure that he's gay, while some fans just assume that he happens to appear effeminte sometimes. Also, I've never heard Leslie admitting in public that he's gay, but at the same time, he stars in romantic MTVs with both male and female portraying himself as a bisexual character. In his last concert (2000), he even kept his hair long (really long), and put on dresses and high heels, something he has never done before in public.

So many things that I can write about Leslie, but I'd better put them in another page!

Bishonen (Translation: Beautiful youth)
Country: Hong Kong
Director: Yeung Feng
Leading Males: Daniel Wu, Stephen Fung

Daniel (~20), a policeman, Stephen (~20), a male prostitute, met each other one day and fell in love at first sight. Well, if they started getting together right away, there would be no story to tell! It turns out that Daniel was once in a bad relationships with another guy, with this and the unspoken pressure of his conservative family, he had become incapable of loving another person openly again. Stephen at the same time, found that it was hard to convey his passion to Daniel, he being a prostitute and all those unworthy feelings of himself.

This movie, as implied in the title, is beautifully made, the male characters look really great in the movie, young, dreamlike, and just unrealistically beautiful. There is also a lesbian character, who is a friend of the other two, that narrates the story with an incredibly sad tone. After all, love turned tragic and ended up with suicide ...
