Ian's Bio
Maybe it’s Moab's desert air or the fact that the arches, canyons, and remote points you want to see sit far off the beaten path. Whatever his motivation, Ian knows how to cover some ground. With over 40 victories in the 100 ultras he entered before his 30th birthday, the current record holder of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning finds freedom on the trails, exploring his surroundings and searching out physical and mental landmarks that few others ever find. First at Honolulu’s HURT 100 2002, part of Team Montrail’s record-setting win at Trailwalker 2001 and a Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 victory are just a few of his most memorable strolls that he describes simply as, “a way of life.” A writer and bioscience technician for the National Park Service, Ian set the record for most ultras won in a year in 1999, bagging a dozen of them, and if his current pace and goal of running into his twilight years continue, that will be just one of the many sure to fall.
