Authors of Act Right: Everything You Need to Know That They Didn't Teach You In Acting Class

Actresses Erin Gray (Silver Spoons, Buck Rogers) and Mara Purl (Days Of Our Lives, Milford-Haven) co-author a comprehensive guide for actors and others who are magically supposed to know what to do their first day on a set.

You suddenly find yourself on a set and the Director says to you, "Now remember, it's really important that you hit your mark. Got it?" Yes sir! you say, while your mind reels.

(A)They re going to give me a gun in this scene?
(B) I'm supposed to find someone named Mark and hit him?
(C)There's going to be a target painted on a piece of scenery and I'm supposed to hit it with the nearest blunt object?

The answer is – none of the above. The correct answer to this and many other important questions is contained in this book – a must-read for anyone who ever plans to walk onto a set, and a highly amusing read for anyone who enjoys watching film, video, or any other form of entertainment.

The writers are themselves seasoned professionals, and they are quite unafraid to disclose their own mistakes and missteps in sometimes amusing, sometimes highly revealing asides. To round out the picture, they've also interviewed colleagues and crew members whose anecdotes make this an engrossing cross between a how-to book and a tell-all novella.

"My first day of work as the star of a television movie was a study in what an actor shouldn't do. I wanted to make sure other actors don't go through the same nightmare," said Erin in talking about her first book. "When you're confident about the technical details, you're free to create as an actor. If you do a brilliant scene but it winds up on the cutting room floor because you don't know how to match, whose fault is it really?"

"One of our goals in writing this book," said Mara, who created and produced the hit BBC series Milford-Haven, U.S.A., "was to help actors see what a collaborative business this is. None of us works alone. The more we know about crew members jobs, the more intelligent we can be about our own work. We're tired of actors getting a bad rap for not being professional."

The book finishes with a glossary of the code words spoken in the entertainment business, which are presented here as a tongue-in-cheek and yet encyclopedic tome of information.

Open the book at random and read a great anecdote or look up an obscure word. But we think you will want to read it from cover to cover. Only then will you be able to Act Right.
