TITLE: "Glory Of Love" AUTHOR: Kylie CATEGORY/RATING: Lucas/Haley friendship (strong) and probably PG-13 SUMMARY: This is a One Tree Hill songfic, that I got the idea for in the car, after listening to the song of the same name. It takes place during “Life In A Glass House”, right after Lucas and Haley get done talking. :-):-) NOTE: I love feedback :-) Tonight it's very clear Cause we're both lying here There's so many things I wanna say I will always love you I will never leave you alone Sometimes I just forget Say things I might regret It breaks my heart to see you crying I don't want to lose you I could never make it alone “You sure you’re gonna be okay Hales?”, Lucas Scott asked, not quite standing up yet. Haley James, his best friend in the entire world, wiped her tears and smiled. “Yeah Luke, I’m gonna be alright. Aren’t I always?” He smiled and tilted her chin upwards. “If you wanna talk later, you know my number.” Haley smiled too and said, “By heart.” He kissed her on the forehead and stood up. That’s when he saw none other than Nathan Scott, the person who caused all this pain, standing outside the door. Lucas stalked over there and threw the door open. “What the hell are you doing here?”, He demanded. Nathan sighed, his hands shoved into the pockets of his Raven’s letterman jacket. “Look, I’m not looking for trouble, Lucas. I wanna talk to Haley, that’s all.” He went to go past him, but Lucas wouldn’t let him. “If you think I’m letting you in here, you’re severely cracked.” Haley was standing up now and she locked eyes with Nathan. And she actually thought she saw sadness and regret in his eyes. Could it be that he was actually sorry what he had done? “You’re an asshole of the lowest form. Do you know what you’ve done? How could you hurt such a caring, beautiful, smart, sweet girl like her? All she ever did was believe in you, unlike a lot of other people.” He glanced back at Haley and then looked back at Nathan. “She saw the good in you, something a lot of other people, including myself, told her she was insane for. Looks like you proved her right.” Nathan was angry now and Haley could see that. She walked forward, toward them, wanting to stop any fight that was about to break out. But now it was Nathan’s turn to talk. “Stay out of it, Lucas. You know absolutely nothing about it.” He glanced at Haley. It was then that he felt absolutely awful. The look in her eyes was something that made him feel like complete and utter shit. Then something occurred to him. “Well, at least not I’m completely oblivious.” Lucas looked at him. “What?” Nathan folded his arms across his chest. “Oblivious, you do know what it means, right? Stupid, not in the loop, retarded…” Lucas nodded. “I know what it means. What the hell are you talkin’ about?” Nathan glanced at Haley, who was shaking her head, but this was definitely something that needed to be said. “I’m talkin’ about the way you completely disregard the feelings of your supposed best friend. So really, I’m not the one who’s hurt her the most here, Lucas. She could not believe that Nathan had just opened that can of worms. She closed her eyes momentarily and when she opened them again, she saw that Lucas had thrown a punch. Nathan staggered backwards, the punch taking him surprise. Then he threw one of his own. Haley tried to step in but she was definitely going to need help. And that’s when Peyton Sawyer showed up. “What’s goin’ on here?”, She asked, getting in between the two guys with Haley. She had been walking to the café, looking for Lucas, and she had actually been standing out there, and heard the whole argument. Lucas spit a little bit of blood out of his mouth, from where Nathan had split it open with his punch. Nathan’s eye was starting to blacken. Haley immediately touched Lucas’s lip and swollen cheek, tsk-ing as she did. You keep me standing tall You help me through it all I'm always strong when you're beside me I have always needed you I could never make it alone Peyton noticed the gesture. Then she saw Lucas look at Haley and into her eyes and they shared something. Something so special that Peyton knew no one would ever be able to penetrate it. “Nathan, come on, we’re leaving. I’ll take you home.” Nathan looked at Lucas and then at Haley. “I’m sorry Haley.”, He said, simply. “For everything.” Haley just nodded and watched him walk out Peyton. Haley turned her attention back to Lucas. “Why would you do that? That’s just gonna make things worse between you guys. And that’s the very last thing I wanted to happen, Lucas. You know that.” He nodded. “You’re right, I know that. But you’re my best friend, Hales. And the way he treated you was unacceptable. I love you and I had to stick up for you. And that’s that.” ( back to Chorus ) Haley’s breath caught in her throat when she heard him say that. She smiled up at him and said, “I love you too Luke. And even though I’m mad that you fought with him, I guess I should thank you for defending my honor. Or something.” They shared a smile. “Any time.”, He said simply. When she stared into his eyes as she was doing now, it made her weak in the knees. She smiled at him and then hugged him to her. “I’m gonna go. But I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” He nodded. “Sure. You sure you don’t need an escort?” Haley laughed and said, “I think you’ve been quite chivalrous enough for one day, Luke.” This made him laugh as well. Haley put her coat on and then turned toward the door. But before she left, she took his right hand that he’d used to punch Nathan and kissed his bruised knuckles. Then she smiled once more and left. It's like a knight in shining armor From a long time ago Just in time I will save the day Take you to my castle far away “You gonna be alright?” Nathan nodded as he opened the passenger side door. “Yeah, I’m gonna be fine. Just another in the long line of punches that are gonna be thrown between my half brother and myself.” Peyton smiled, which caused Nathan to raise his eyebrows. “What?”, He asked. She shrugged. “Nothing. Just…that’s the first time you’ve ever referred to him as that and not cringed.” Nathan nodded. “Yeah…well, I guess I’m growin’ up…right before your very eyes.” This made her laugh and said, “Maybe.” He kissed her on the cheek. “Thanks.” She watched him walk inside and then drove away. ( back to Chorus ) We live forever knowing together That we did it all for the glory of love Karen Rowe walked into the living room and saw that her son was watching a Western on television. “Another Western, Lucas? I swear to God you’re on a kick with these things…” That’s when she noticed his face. “Do you wanna explain this to me?”, She said, looking at him. He stood up, sighing. “It’s nothing, Mom. Haley’s honor needed defending. So I did it.” With that, he walked out of the room. And Karen couldn’t help but smile to herself and shake her head.
