Floods Kill 57 People in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA (Nov. 1) XINHUA - Floods caused by overflowing rivers in Afder and Liben districts of Ethiopia's Somali Region have killed 57 people and besieged thousands of others, the Ethiopian News Agency reported today.

The report said thousands of people in the area are surrounded by the water, indicating that the problem is acute, particularly in Dollo Addo town.

Over 4,000 people have been displaced while 9,045 domestic animals and vegetables grown on 655 hectares of land were washed away, according to the report.

Meanwhile, floods caused by heavy downpour in three rural districts of the region have also washed away 80 pet animals and destroyed 90 houses.

Unspecified amount of property has been destroyed while 15 people sustained heavy and light injuries, the report said.

The Dire Dawa Administration Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Office has expressed readiness to provide the victims with emergency ration, the report said.
