HUNDREDS DIE IN OGADEN

Hundreds die in Ethiopia floods

Nov 19, 1997

Reports from Ethiopia say the government of the Somali region of the country has announced that almost three-hundred people have died as a result of the floods in recent weeks.

The regional government said more than sixty-five thousand people had been displaced, some four-thousand houses swept away and crops destroyed.

The Somali regional authorities appealed to the government in the capital Addis Ababa for more helicopters to help in the rescue effort. The Juba and the Shebelle rivers, which have caused such damage in neighbouring Somalia, rise in Ethiopia.
